EXPERTS say they’ve developed a simple test to determine people’s true age — by measuring a biological substance in urine. Jian-Ping Cai, a researcher at the National Center of Gerontology in China, explains, “Oxygen by-products produced during normal metabolism can cause oxidative damage to biomolecules in cells, such as DNA and RNA.” According to Cai, as humans age, “we suffer increasing oxidative damage, and so the levels of oxidative markers increase in our body.” One such marker, 8-oxoGsn, results from RNA oxidation.
