NSW’s Department of Primary Industries (DPI) has been working assiduously to implement a formal Harvest Strategy Policy for the fisheries it manages. It’s undertaken plenty of consultation on the policy’s development, including with the rec sector. But many of its fisheries are small-scale and multi-sector, with a range of data issues, which poses management challenges. To assist in the identification of current and future harvest strategy options, DPI is using an online tool called FishPath, which was developed as a partnership between the CSIRO, The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and NOAA. FishPath provides a means of navigating available options for individual fisheries, rather than adopting a “one-size-fits-all” approach. The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) has released its most recent report on activities aimed at protecting marine life around the world. Highlights include cleaning up harbours around Newfoundland, Canada…. removing discarded fishing nets, abandoned crab pots and lobster traps, plastic buoys, rope, plastic bags, PVC pipe, plastic containers, food wrappers, tyres and a range of other nasties. Its rescue teams have also responded to over three hundred dolphin, porpoise, seal and whale rescue calls in six months, almost two per day. IFAW has also been working with government officials around the world to implement legislation to minimise ocean noise pollution, which can adversely affect whale feeding areas, breeding regions and migratory routes, and lead to deadly ship strikes. I have always loved the Northern Rivers area of New South Wales. Characterised by lush semi-tropical landscapes and huge estuaries that seem to go on forever, the far north of the state offers something different for anglers like me who typically fish more southern waters. The geography, climate and species on offer make it a tantalising destination for fishers - and their families - wanting a change of scenery. The massive Tweed estuary is the most “northern” of the Northern Rivers. It’s also one of the fishiest in my opinion. Splitting New South Wales and Queensland, it begins as a series of shallow pools and riffles inland from Murwillumbah, then winds its way for nearly 80km through lush forests and farming country before spilling into the sea at Tweed Heads.…

WHATEVER journals you may read of our early explorers, I can't help but be impressed of the hardships and the lengths they endured to make new discoveries. The Burke and Wills expedition was one that really stirs the imagination and how it went so wrong so soon after leaving Melbourne. The expedition left Melbourne in August of 1860 and arrived at camp 65 on the Cooper Creek in December in the height of an Australian Summer. The party again split here with Burke, Wills, King and Gray making the dash to the gulf to complete the first south – north crossing of Australia. In Northern Australia there are only two seasons, the wet and the dry. From an anglers perspective the end of the wet season can be a time of plenty, as the water leaves the many flood plains and pours into the draining rivers. The entire ecology of most tropical areas is dependent on the length and intensity of the wet season. When a poor wet season occurs the amount of life on both the land and in the rivers and estuaries is greatly diminished. After a good wet season everything is green and teeming with life. PENN released its popular Slammer III reel a few years back. That reel was a runaway success for the iconic American brand with a sturdy construction, quality drag, and a modest price tag. I own several Slammer IIIs and have used them everywhere from Sydney Harbour to PNG. I found them reliable and more than fit for purpose. Penn recently updated the series with the new Slammer IV. At first glance it looks very similar to its predecessor. I guess there’s no point fixing what’s not broken. Penn also introduced a new 2500 size with the new Slammer. Out of all the gamefish species in the world the mighty marlin is without a doubt highly sought after by many light and heavy tackle anglers. The main reason for this is not just for the marlin’s fighting ability, but for their spectacular aerial displays that gets everyone onboard the boat so wound up and excited. These visual, airborne exhibitions not only send the captain, crew and anglers into raptures, but photographers like me can’t get enough of this kind of action. Q: TIPS ON CATCHING MORE SALMON OUT OF A BOAT? Nicole E-mail A: Australian salmon are one of the most underrated sportfish along our coast, and if dispatched quickly, bled, and iced are reasonable table fare. They can be tricky to catch at times as they can get very focussed on small baitfish, but a 70-100mm wriggler or stick bait style plastic on a 1/6 to ¼ ounce jighead can fool them. Trolling hardbody lures like Rapala x-raps in the 11-14cm size along the washy headlands, especially adjacent to a beach will find you a few salmon, 3-5 knots is a good speed; you just want to see the rod tip bouncing as the lure swims along.
