I have never been very successful at collecting things. As a kid I once tried to start a shell collection, inspired by finding a number of attractive shells on a beach near my home in Scotland. Rather than having a carbon fibre plate right across the bottom of the shoe, the Surge has a narrow ‘beam’ of carbon that links the forefoot and heel. ‘When you’ve got a traditional plate last, what you are effectively doing is strapping the foot onto the footbed, which restricts the natural movement of the foot,’ says Giant’s Rob Lyne. ‘The ExoBeam maintains a stiff bed for power transfer but it allows the foot its natural torsional movement, which takes the pressure off the ankle and knee during the pedal rotation.’ The ExoBeam was present on the previous version of the Surge, launched three years ago. There’s a lot of gratuitously energetic activity going on in the Gorge de la Méouge this morning. On our right, people are descending a rocky path to a river to swim in one of its many natural pools, while others are crossing the arches of a 500-year-old stone bridge to begin a day’s hiking in the craggy folds of a dark and twisting ravine. Hundreds of metres above us, spread out along the length of a ridge like giant moths waiting for a lightbulb to be switched on, are the colourful canopies and sails of various types of glider as their pilots wait patiently for the thermal currents to rise. I'm close to empty, both physically and mentally. Every part of my body hurts or aches, but as much as I want to lie down and close my eyes, I have to gather myself for one last effort, one final push to the finish line. We’ve never had it so good. Recent road bikes launched for 2019 really do feel like they have taken giant strides forward. Disc brakes have revolutionised stopping power, and are no longer a hindrance to aerodynamics and weight. Just look at the likes of the new Specialized S-Works Venge and the Cannondale SystemSix.
