Colour blocking has been packing a prismatic punch this season in the worlds of fashion and design. Issey Miyake has formed pieces from ‘Blink’, a new resin-printed polyester fabric sporting geometric prints on an abstract kaleidoscopic landscape. Meanwhile, Spanish designer Tomás Alonso’s Japanese-inspired lamps feature colour-blocked designs crafted from bamboo frames and delicate sheets of washi paper. There’s a stripe-tease sensibility behind Patricia Urquiola’s rug designs for fellow Spaniards Gan, and Craig Green’s creations for Italian label Moncler’s Genius project. Both designers have had weight loss on their minds, with Green getting a feel for Moncler’s classic down clothing, creating striped outerwear that is both lightweight and foldable. ‘I wanted to explore how large volumes could become incredibly small and easily compacted for travel,’ says Green. For her ‘Nuances’ collection, Urquiola used recycled felt fibres to create rugs and poufs that sport graduated and gently curving stripes. Since founding her studio in 2013, Danish designer Margrethe Odgaard has been championing a holistic approach to colour theory that has struck a chord in design circles. Instead of talking about the topic in terms of trends and numbers, Odgaard talks of colour as a sensory experience that engages both the mind and body. Her research into colour and light has led to collaborations with Scandinavian giants such as Hay and Ikea, for which she develops palettes and products, and Muuto, for which she created bobbly rugs designed to feel like pebbles. Her latest works include ‘Atlas’, a woollen upholstery fabric for Kvadrat that possesses an exceptional colour intensity, as well as a colour palette for Montana rooted in a body-mind philosophy with hues that awaken all of the senses.…

Our turbulent relationship with plastic has increasingly become a topic of heated debate and a spur for design innovation. Our favourite response came from Priestman Goode; on discovering that air travel is one of the worst offenders when it comes to single-use plastics (more than five million tonnes of the stuff is thrown away from passenger flights each year), the London-based industrial design studio created this fully recyclable in-flight meal tray, which swaps polluting polymers for plates, cups and cutlery made from coffee grains, waffle cone, algae skins, banana leaves and coconut wood. priestmangoode.com…

Designers have been firing on all cylinders lately, with Hervé Van der Straeten proving he has the Midas touch with his newest table design. The French designer’s ‘Meditation’ console is formed from a pile of polished stainless steel tubes, which emit a shimmering rose gold hue and recede in size from the base of the table to its marble top. Meanwhile, Bottega Veneta’s half moon-shaped minaudière is a bit of a pipe dream. According to Barber & Osgerby, the soft curves of its ‘Smalto’ table for Knoll are made all the more appealing thanks to the intense vibrancy of its high-gloss enamel finish, seen here in an irresistible dark aubergine. Overhead, the U-shaped modules of ByMars’ ‘Cirkus’ chandelier for Ago echo the table’s tubular legs, as do the curved bases of Guglielmo Poletti’s ‘Void’ stools for Desalto. Danish studio Norm Architects has brought its meticulously crafted ‘soft minimalism’ to the interior architecture of a 70ft sailing yacht. Bella is the first iteration of German shipyard Michael Schmidt Yachtbau’s new Y Yachts Y7 line, a sleekly competitive vessel blending performance with stability and comfort. Well-planned controls allow a single helmsman to operate the yacht alone, and the interior has a similarly pared-back ethos – minimal spaces are unified by a consistency of materials. The master cabin, at the bow, is accompanied by more double cabins, a spacious galley and sitting area, an office, crew quarters, and a hidden tender garage at the stern. In between publishing his first monograph, revamping Hélène Darroze’s restaurant at The Connaught in London and staging an acclaimed gallery show, Yovanovitch, our outgoing Designer of the Year, fitted in a stint as Wallpaper* Design Awards judge. The French designer, whose work ranges from Kering’s Paris HQ to a winery in Portugal, is known for his elegant forms that elicit excitement and wonder. Having recently added the dash of whimsy that is now his trademark to the interiors of Le Coucou hotel in the Alps, he is now working on penthouses perched atop BIG’s The XI towers in New York – incidently, his first choice for Best City, as ‘New York makes you feel like anything is possible’. In the past year, the work of the New Zealand-born, Rotterdam-based designer Sabine Marcelis has widened the spectrum of what light, glass and resin – alongside more unexpected materials – can do. Take, for example, the stretch between two projects produced in quick chronological order: there was the serene elegance of The Shapes of Water, ten fountains devised for Fendi at the 2018 Design Miami, and then the childlike abandon of the ‘Donuts’ rug conceived for Carpet Sign. Marcelis went on to cast ‘Xmas Donuts’ ornaments using leftover resin. As the designer joked on her Instagram account, it was indeed ‘the year of the donut’. Kim Jones drew on Christian Dior’s time as a gallerist with a collection that explored creative translation – between art and fashion, masculine and feminine, couture and the street. Nylons were like silks; drapery and tailoring came in a soft palette and deluxe textiles. Animal prints were inspired by the Panthère motif, introduced by Christian Dior in his first collection in 1947, while the elegance of Dior’s 1955 sari-inspired ‘Soirée de Lahore’ dress was here in the evening tailoring. The past few months have proved especially busy for Liz Diller, whose practice, Diller Scofidio + Renfro, repeatedly garnered headlines with two high-profile projects on its home turf of New York: firstly, the highly anticipated opening of The Shed, a state-of-the-art gallery and performance space with an already-iconic telescoping outer shell that transforms the adjoining plaza into a mammoth performance hall; and secondly, the eagerly awaited revamp of the Museum of Modern Art, with a new creativity lab, café and terrace. ‘The two projects couldn’t be more different: one tweaks the inherited institution; the other is a start-up that tests a new paradigm,’ Diller reflects. It’s been a big year for Danish floral design specialist Tableau, which has blossomed from a budding studio to a fully bloomed label. Lauded by Phaidon in Blooms: Contemporary Floral Design as one of the most impressive florists around, the Copenhagen-based design, art and flower atelier has created large-scale ‘flower clouds’ for the likes of Christian Louboutin and Gubi. To show off their skills, founder Julius Iversen installed this brooding landscape in Tableau’s David Thulstr-up-designed boutique. This modular lift cabin wouldn’t look out of place in a Wes Anderson production. Created by Lebanese design studio David/Nicolas for local manufacturer Mitsulift, the D/N1 features diffused top lighting, a striated upper section in natural oak, a laminate lower section, available in four statement colours (night blue, grenadine red, pepper grey or basil green), and travertine flooring. A round, steel-framed mirror and oak handrail lend geometric contrast and heighten the design’s cinematic qualities. When Acne Studios’ Jonny Johansson was looking for inspiration to furnish the entrance of his new brutalist HQ, a 1970s former embassy building in Stockholm, he looked to the capital’s City Hall: ‘It is a mix between Viking fort and Italian piazza, and it inspired me to ask Max Lamb to create a Viking graveyard,’ he says. The British designer, who first started working with the brand on its retail projects in 2015, sourced hunks of granite from quarries in Småland, southern Sweden, and transformed them into crooked tombstone-like chairs, stools and tables with polished seats and tops. ‘The pieces bring a little of the outdoors into the space, and break up the monotony of the grid-like architecture,’ explains Lamb. acnestudios.com; maxlamb.org…

Simone Farresin and Andrea Trimarchi, who founded Formafantasma in 2009, have long been obsessed with the design potential of lava. This year, the pair put their research to the test, working alongside London-based materials studio Dzek to create a range of tiles finished with a volcanic ash glaze. The process for creating the ‘ExCinere’ collection is meticulous: first the ash is sieved into different particle sizes, before being weighed out in precise measurements to determine the shade of the glaze. The glaze is then hand-sprayed onto the surface of the tiles, which come in two sizes, and finally fired, resulting in four variations, each in a rich, fiery hue. Peru’s Urubamba valley is a fertile agricultural region, best known for the production of corn, quinoa and other grains. Populated with native Andean trees, such as queñuas and pisonays, the valley sits at the foot of mountains that are part of the Cordillera Oriental – the easternmost range before the Amazon region. It is often known as el Valle Sagrado (the Sacred Valley) because the Incas believed the mountains overlooking it to be celestial beings. It was this landscape that architect Jean-Pierre Crousse – of Lima-based duo Barclay & Crousse – first thought of when he was approached by an old school friend to build on an empty plot in Urubamba’s Huayoccari area. Typologically hovering between a folly, a house and a viewing platform, this new cabin, in Norway’s Hardangervidda National Park, was designed by Oslo studio Gartnerfuglen Arkitekter. Created as an addition to an existing 1980s cabin for a client with a growing extended family, Thunder Top is designed within a simple triangular outline and features a stepped timber roof that can be ascended for panoramic views. The façades are clad in ore-pine, a hardwearing, cured pinewood, left untreated for a largely maintenance-free exterior that will slowly blend into the environment. British designer Daniel Lee has only been at the creative helm of Bottega Veneta for a year and a half, but his seductive, off-kilter and glamorous vision has been transformative. Materiality is at the heart of his aesthetic, and his clothing and accessories reinterpret the Italian label’s signature Intrecciato weave in emphatic proportions. Serendipitously, Lee voted for Sabine Marcelis as Designer of the Year for her fabrication focus: ‘I love her purist approach to material. This new build, in Sussex’s South Downs National Park, was designed by architect Adam Richards as his family home. Created in structural concrete with a thick brick skin and a black zinc roof, the house is a stepped volume with distinct arched windows that add a sense of motion to the design. Inside, a modest entrance opens up to a cathedral-like, open-plan main living area, while the bedrooms are stacked in the tall end of the house, over a more formal living room, richly decorated with artworks and with large openings that look out over the leafy surrounds. The glasshouse is a typology that exists on the cutting edge of art and science, technology and style. Starting with medicinal plants, then scientific research, botanical display and finally industrial-scale cultivation, the evolution of the modern greenhouse has closely tracked available technology, from the development of glass itself to new kinds of structure and materials. This new greenhouse in Pirque, Chile, by Max Núñez, presents the pleasures of collection, cultivation and display with quiet architectural sophistication. It is a relatively modest 11.4 x 11.4m structure, raised up on a plinth to give the impression of a floating glass box. When Bina Goenka bade farewell to her career as a lawyer, her mastery of forensic detail remained gloriously intact. The Mumbai high jeweller’s 2019 ‘Mercury’ earrings are a shining celebration of intricacy: ‘My craftsmen and I went back and forth over how to make the earlobe and earring-post invisible, something that was not just design, but geometry, too.’ Two years in the making, the hinged ‘Mercury’ earrings have two halves – one with a post, the other with a tube into which the post enters, through the lobe. Ever since the launch of Grand Seiko, Seiko’s higher-end offering, into European and US markets, the 150-year-old Japanese watchmaker’s ardent fanbase has hankered to see more of its craft excellence. That wish was finally granted with the launch of the Grand Seiko Elegance range, a dress watch collection matching Japanese horological prowess with local decorative techniques, such as urushi lacquering and maki-e. Thankfully, its geometric elements are not made of actual rock but a soft memory foam that can be upholstered in either fabric or leather, in a choice of subdued colours. Solange began 2019 with the release of her fourth album, When I Get Home, accompanied by a dreamlike film that merged images of Texas and an animated sequence featuring flying machines. She finished the year curating a thrilling fusion of music, dance and Afrofuturist philosophy at LA’s Getty Center. In between, the musician has progressively expanded her artistic reach, with a repertoire that now spans filmmaking, choreography, performance art, sculpture and design. For his debut runway collection for Bottega Veneta, Daniel Lee – formerly ready-to-wear design director at Celine and a Phoebe Philo protégé – presented a collection of subversive bourgeois silhouettes and strong biker looks that drew on the house’s artisanal leather-making history. Blazers fell slightly off the shoulder, while demure dresses boasted sculptural cut-outs and shirt dresses shimmered with square sequins. As one of Asia’s most prominent developers and a leading patron of the arts, Adrian Cheng has both the resources and the vision to transform today’s cultural landscape. His signature approach, which bundles high-end retail with game-changing architecture, design and art, is exemplified by K11 Musea, opened in his home town of Hong Kong last August, with a show-stopping atrium straight out of a sci-fi movie. Meanwhile, Cheng’s non-profit K11 Craft & Guild Foundation works to preserve local crafts, and his work with Light Be focuses on affordable housing initiatives designed by young Hong Kong architects. The star attraction of Aman’s new boutique property in Kyoto is its spectacular natural setting within a once-forgotten secret garden and, beyond that, a 72-acre backdrop of lush forest. For his final project with the group, the late architect Kerry Hill inserted a series of low-key pavilions over the garden’s terraced platforms, which are laced with a tableau of moss-covered garden paths and fringed by a small stream and a wooded hill. Taking its name from the flat ribbon shape of its handles and spouts, the set pays homage to Walter Gropius’ classic 1969 ‘Tac’ tea set, also for Rosenthal. On the menu is baker Lily Vanilli’s cake-based collaboration with London teahouse Xu, which includes Bakewell mooncakes, fool’s gold chocolate truffles and mini dried plum celebration cakes.
