A spread of falafels and sweet potato fries has been laid out, but even so, the gentle smell of freshly cut wood seems omnipresent. See the finished exhibition piece on page 166 An orgiastic frieze of genitalia, limbs and mouths seems an unlikely subject for a 173-year-old glass maker to hand-cut onto its refined crystal tableware. Yet that is exactly what the Czech company Rückl did when collaborating with Switzerland-based artist Marine Julié for this year’s Handmade. The resulting ‘Constellations of Us’ vases and cups feature what Julié calls ‘a farandole of bisexual beings’, their curvaceous forms melding into, grasping and probing each other. This imagery is a trademark of Julié’s. She often paints it on walls and rock faces – large-scale sites befitting a trained architect. The Hindu god Shiva has more than most: among them a third eye, a blue throat, a crescent moon branded on his forehead and a serpent garlanded around his body. Shiva also has the ‘lingam’, a phallus-like allegorical symbol announcing his reproductive power and aptitude for constructive destruction, which inspired the ‘Monolith’ table lamp at this year’s Handmade. When we approached Seoul-based interior design firm Teo Yang Studio and Mallorcan tile manufacturer Huguet (both winners in the 2019 Wallpaper* Design Awards, W*239) to create a contemporary birdbath, both parties were intrigued. For practice founder Teo Yang, it was a particular challenge, as birdbaths don’t exist in Korea. The initial reaction from his studio was one of delight and surprise (‘Do birds take baths?’). Huguet’s owner Biel Huguet had a similar response. The inspiration behind Yang’s ‘Three Isles’ series of birdbath designs plays partly on the theme of this year’s Handmade exhibition, love, which led to the idea of love birds. Canadian artist, novelist and national treasure Douglas Coupland teamed up with London’s Architectural Association School of Architecture (AA) for his Handmade project, producing a ‘forest’ of sex toys at the school’s recently opened Digital Prototyping Laboratory. On 25 June 1967, the very first live global satellite television production was broadcast. It was the height of the Vietnam War, and while Our World featured tent-pole performers such as Maria Callas and Pablo Picasso, it was The Beatles’ performance from EMI’s Abbey Road studios of All You Need is Love – a song John Lennon penned specially for the occasion – that captured the global zeitgeist. It was also a game-changing moment in telecommunications technology, an unusually specific Big Bang that birthed the idea of global connectivity. Though connectivity has now become commonplace, the echoes of All You Need is Love still resonate with Clara Yee. As we started to plot our suitably heart-warming and celebratory tenth edition of Wallpaper* Handmade, we also knew we had to look forward to the exhibition’s second decade. Handmade had been groundbreaking in its honouring of craft and collaboration but it was time to propel ourselves onwards and upwards. Over the lifetime of Handmade, ideas about what design can and should do have been dramatically enlarged. So many pressing to outright urgent concerns – the use and misuse of resources, sustainability, environmental trauma, or even housing provision, food production, meaningful communication, lower-impact travel – can be seen as design problems. ‘Design thinking’ is being applied in all sorts of bold new ways. Evoking a beating heart or a flower, this ring is rooted in the natural world. Pomp drew inspiration from the slot canyons of Utah, while Lau took cues from Jean Arp and Georgia O’Keeffe’s organic artworks. To see their Handmade design for the first time, Francesca Lanzavecchia and Hunn Wai have travelled all the way to Globe-Trotter’s British factory from their respective bases in Italy and Singapore. It’s a wintry day in Hertfordshire, but the pair are practically bursting with excitement as we are ushered around on a guided tour of the factory’s well-oiled production line, prior to the big reveal. Established in 1897 by David Nelken in Saxony, Germany, Globe-Trotter moved its business to the UK in 1932, where it developed a thoroughly British DNA and, in turn, picked up a varied list of devotees, from Elizabeth II to Kate Moss. Following the launch of his own surface company Altrock last year, we knew we had to get him on board for this year’s Handmade. Altrock sees Grasby give new life to discarded materials, creating work surfaces and tables from pieces of natural stone set within a resin mix made up of recycled marble chips, recycled marble powder and colour pigments. Thomas Lykke’s modular ‘Cabinet of Love’ for Handmade celebrates the warmer embrace of vinyl, the ritual flip from side to side, and the art form of the album cover with the creation of a ridge on the central lid that allows it to be displayed. ISKO ‘It all started with a question,’ says ISKO brand director Fabio Di Liberto of its Denim Sound Textures project: ‘What if clothes could talk; what if we could hear their thoughts and voices?’ To answer this conundrum, he and his team worked with sound artist Chiara Luzzana to explore the acoustic qualities of denim. There was plenty for Luzzana to sample; ISKO is the world’s largest producer of denim, creating 300 million metres of the fabric every year, for brands such as Hugo, Replay and 7 For All Mankind. MEMENTO Lai Chan wanted to convey the simplicity of love through this pebble-shaped piece, crafted in collaboration with Kelham Island Concrete. The object exists as a memento, perfectly sculpted, with tactile holes, to fit into the hand of a loved one, a reminder of the relationship with the person who gifted it. Lai Chan Singapore fashion designer Chan is best known for his subtle interpretations of the traditional Chinese cheongsam, but his output spans seasonal collections and costumes for TV and theatre productions. ‘My earliest memory of love is my mother tucking me in bed with a blanket so that I felt the warmth, both physically and psychologically,’ says Asylum’s Chris Lee, whose patchwork blanket is made using ties from Turnbull & Asser’s archives. Lee and his team chose the tie as a symbol of work, of ‘bringing home the bread’, in ‘a subtle message for us not to forget the different ways in which love touches us’. Symmetry and balance. These are words that British sculptor Owen Bullett uses a lot in describing both his design for the ‘Love Rocker’ – created in partnership with Belgian table manufacturers and wood specialists Heerenhuis – and the collaboration itself. On a typically grey Flanders day, Bullett is sitting on a table in the Heerenhuis workshop in a warehouse 25 minutes from Antwerp’s city centre, carving hefts out of an assemblage of wooden semi-circles that will, in a matter of days, become his contribution to our annual Handmade exhibition in Milan. Sound meets sculpture in ‘Circle of Fifths’, a Handmade collaboration between the Danish audio specialist Bang & Olufsen and the Latvian artist and designer Germans Ermičs.
