In the 1950s, vast car workshops and showrooms became a frequent sight on urban peripheries. The concrete, steel and glass Schlotterbeck Citroen Garage in Zurich, designed in 1951 by Basel architects Suter & Suter, is a perfect example. But now, 67 years later, the site is part of the dense city structure where space is at a premium and people, not cars, have priority. The listed garage has been vertically repurposed by architects Giuliani Honger, providing 2,150 sq m of commercial space and 104 apartments. Its signature concrete structure has been enhanced with new floors, as well as the addition of a 40m-high drum-shaped tower. Cuba has been renowned for many things over the years (cigars, mojitos, bright colours), but not its culinary offerings. However, food on the tropical island has been undergoing something of a renaissance lately, with the arrival of new paladares (private restaurants in people’s homes), farmers’ markets and street food stalls. Imogene Tondre, co-author of new book, Cuba: The Cookbook (published by Phaidon), says, ‘There’s a huge increase in restaurants and paladares, and they’re innovating with creative takes on traditional dishes using local ingredients’. Having spent millions on extensive research into the shopping opportunities afforded by tech – from shoppable Instagram accounts to virtual fitting rooms – fashion brands are now trying to imitate a much more lo-fi model. Credited as the brainchild of New York skate brand Supreme, it is known as the ‘drop’. Supreme’s drop arrives on Thursdays. The brand sends a short email out to its fans and followers to inform them that new product is in its stores and on its e-shop. Queues form quickly outside its stores and, once it hits send, traffic to its website increases by more than 15,000 per cent. W*: How did you first meet Alaïa? CK: Didier and I did a show with Marc [Newson] in 2000, the year after our gallery opened, which is when we met Azzedine. On the banks of the Soligo River, amid the prosecco-producing hills of northern Treviso, sits a 17th-century granary whose timber-girded attic attracts a lot of stares from pedestrians. It’s not the antiquity of the converted home that’s astonishing – almost everything in this village is several hundred years old – but the sight through the windows of a glowing flock of pentagon-shaped lights, floating like UFOs beneath an old pitched ceiling. London’s Farringdon Station is about to break into the infrastructural big time, becoming a key interchange on the world’s oldest and most prestigious transport network. With the coming of the Crossrail project and its Elizabeth line, this historic stop on the edge of the City of London will be a meeting point for Tube and rail. Carving out thousands of cubic metres of earth beneath a 2,000-year-old city was always going to be a challenge, yet as you walk along the deep-level platforms, crossovers and tunnels of this shiny new piece of the capital’s transport jigsaw, it seems almost impossible to conceive that everything around you is totally new. Some people get their name on a street sign – though generally when it’s too late for them to see it. Ora ïto, the puckish 41-year-old French designer with a talent for controversy, is about to have his name on a streetcar snaking across Nice. The tram is sleek and futuristic, and gleams like a candy apple. Born Ito Morabito, Ora ïto spent his childhood in Nice. ‘That’s what makes the project even more incredible,’ says the designer, who keeps a miniature model of the tram on a shelf in his Parisian loft. ‘To have an entire line in the city where you grew up is very special.’ His logo will appear next to the manufacturer’s, Alstom, on both sides of each vehicle, a fact that pleases him immensely. Glory days LUTETIA, PARIS When the Lutetia hotel opened on Paris’ Left Bank in 1910, it became the talk of the town, as much for embracing the emerging art deco style as for being a hub for Paris’ intellectual elite (Matisse and Picasso both took up residence there). Now, after a lavish four-year restoration, the hotel has been returned to its former glory. Aided by a phalanx of skilled craftsmen, architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte’s firm has meticulously revived original details, such as the stained-glass windows and a fresco by Adrien Karbowsky. Fluted wood panelling, brushed oak floors, handblown Murano glass wall lights and rich textiles in creamy caramel, aubergine and blue fill the relatively understated guest rooms. Now that private jets are becoming par for the course, hotels are taking their amenities tarmac-side. The Peninsula, Four Seasons and Aman have all unveiled plans for their own fixed-based operations (FBOs), aka VIP terminals for private aircraft. Extending the branded experience to where the money is makes sense, but this means playing catch-up to ambitious upstarts like Jetex and Signature, the latter with over 200 VIP terminals to its name. FBOs compete not only on style, but also on mundane issues like passport control and fuel price, making it tougher still for new arrivals. Just like commercial airline lounges, there’s plenty of space for competing FBOs. And as The Four Seasons Private Jet Experience shows, the leap from branded FOBs to airbound hotels is small. How do you take your coffee?, Strong Italian espresso shots in my studio. I don’t go to coffee shops. Who was your inspiration when you were growing up? My father. He was always building things. Floating among the dense tree canopy of São Paulo’s leafy Jardins suburb is architect Marcio Kogan’s latest offering, an artfully created box named Volume C. It is the second space the Brazilian architect has created for furniture and design store Micasa, founded over 20 years ago by Houssein Jarouche and dealing in design from the emerging and the established. ‘It stands for good design, rather than just labels,’ says Kogan. Completing Micasa’s corner-site complex, Volume C is intended as a pavilion for new retail concepts, events and designers in residence. For Kogan, the leading light of contemporary Brazilian modernism and principal of São Paulo-based Studio MK27, Jarouche was an ideal client. ‘Good clients with an open mind allow for experimentation whatever the programme is,’ he says. To get to Roni Horn’s home and studio in upstate New York, you drive through farm villages, past horses grazing on meadows, and after a few turns, reach a gate leading to a rugged dirt road. Even on a balmy spring day, the road is covered in a layer of ice. It’s a long, winding ascent until you reach another turn, passing by two seal-brown buildings, before finally reaching a house overlooking a small lake, with floor-to-ceiling windows and deeply set eaves on each end. The sun pours through the building, bathing the space in a cool light on this slightly overcast day. Many architects design a house as their first solo project, so in that sense Jake Moulson’s case is not unusual. But far from being a typical residential conversion, Moulson’s renovated Georgian townhouse is a true one-off: an intricate collage of different materials and atmospheres that has been carefully orchestrated to feel almost like several different projects folded into one. The resulting home is a real architectural treasure trove that begs to be explored and experienced. As elaborate and extravagant as the space may seem, there is a surprisingly pragmatic thinking behind it and a method in the madness of its London-based author. On a snowy day in March, all sorts of things are happening in Carol Bove’s studio. An assistant in a white Tyvek suit is stripping down a sculpture – one of the seven lively blue forms that stood like an abstract family outside the Swiss Pavilion in Venice during the 2017 art biennale. Another is welding a huge steel tube, which seems to have writhed into submission, crushed and doubled up on itself. Gordon Terry, Bove’s husband and the studio’s managing partner, is showing a couple around the huge space. ‘He has oversight,’ says Bove, ‘but he’s really doing his own stuff right now.’ Terry, also an artist, is currently studying philosophy. ‘We talk about Kant all the time,’ adds Bove. London’s V&A Museum is engaging in a spot of reverse archaeology. For its latest exhibition, ‘The Future Starts Here’, it has scoured labs the world over – from Silicon Valley giants to Scottish start-ups – to collate more than 100 objects that point the way ahead. Filled with prototypes, ongoing experiments and finished products, the exhibition avoids sci-fi fantasy and shaky speculations and is thoroughly grounded in ‘the real’, explain curators Mariana Pestana and Rory Hyde. With the input of expert advisors, they have assembled a collection of objects, from personal-use satellites to home DNA labs, that promise to change the mechanics of everyday life. And soon. At the original Bangkok outpost of Thai brand Sukhothai, which opened 27 years ago, six acres of sprawling landscaped gardens hide lotus ponds in courtyards, small pagodas and guest rooms outfitted with dark teak interiors and four-poster beds. In Shanghai, the scene couldn’t be more different. Taking two months to make, it requires 879 plastic sand moulds, in the shape of strawberries, grapes, pears and pretzels, a stainless steel frame comprising 24 hoops and 52 sticks, and the services of an architect, a carpenter and two assistants. China is a fertile breeding ground for automotive start-ups. Lynk & Co, Nio, Byton and Polestar have all recently emerged fully formed, marking a shift away from established brand names and towards a connected, all-electric future. These brand new brands are liberated from a century of fossil-fuelled heritage and show a willingness to completely rethink the role of the car. Geely, the biggest car company you’ve never heard of, is building the Lynk & Co EV sub-brand, as well as Polestar, a Volvo-affiliated performance marque. Eyewear designers have set their sights firmly on the future, with shades fitting for both summer lounging or more intergalactic sojourns. Look to Bottega Veneta or eyewear specialists Lindberg for graphic free-floating lenses with industrial hardware fixtures. For those preferring transparency, Dolce & Gabbana favours clear acetate frames, while a collaboration between Silhouette and Perret Schaad has resulted in styles with slivers of space between lens and frame. Espresso cups tinkle on a marble table as Franck Bonnet and Pierre Bonnefille talk animatedly on the first floor of bespoke eyewear brand Maison Bonnet’s Paris atelier. Situated near Place des Victoires, the space – a welcoming, polished salon in velvety dark tones – opened in 2009 and was designed by Bonnefille, one of France’s leading interior architects. Azzedine Alaïa dedicated his life to designing clothes that transcended trends, super-enhanced the female physique and upheld the classical ideal. His designs had an apparent simplicity, hard-won through fearless experimentation and technical complexity. One of the last projects he worked on before he passed away in November 2017 was a solo show at London’s Design Museum that would tie in with a new Maison Alaïa flagship store on Bond Street. Alaïa had prepared the exhibition with gallerist Carla Sozzani, curator Mark Wilson, and the co-director of the Design Museum Alice Black. The work of Vienna-based designers Nadja Zerunian and Peter Weisz is akin to alchemy. Using materials such as copper, marble and glass, the pair create unusual, sophisticated pieces, often combining them with quirky vintage objects found at flea markets and antique shops around the world. The resulting limited-edition collections are as unexpected as they are seductive. Copper show PARAMOUNT HOUSE HOTEL, SYDNEY The trio behind some of Australia’s hippest coffee shops, Russell Beard, Ping Jin Ng and Mark Dundon have just opened their first hotel project in Sydney’s Surry Hills. It is set in the former HQ of Paramount Pictures and in an adjoining film storage warehouse, stitched together by Melbourne architects Breathe. Along with a new rooftop wellness space, the 29-room property joins Paramount House’s existing tenants – a café, cinema, bar and co-working space – and is signalled by a striking copper-clad extension that creates visual drama and functions as a privacy screen for a series of terraces, many of which are linked to the guest rooms, where concrete ceilings and brick walls are softened with colourful rugs and low-slung furniture.
