This year sees the 30th anniversary of Italian footwear brand Rucoline, founded by husband and wife Marco Santucci and Daniela Penchini. Renowned for creating sports shoes with sophistication, Rucoline devised the 200 model, the first high-heeled trainer, in 1992. Its original design, conceived by Penchini, features a tactile upper in mesh lace, inspired by the colourful crocheted shoes that Santucci had bought and collected in the mid-1980s while living in the Caribbean town of Boca Chica in the Dominican Republic. The transformation of the Nantes Museum of Fine Arts into one of France’s top cultural draws is nearing completion. This once-stuffy regional French gallery building, dating from 1900, has been turned inside out by London architecture practice Stanton Williams, which has brought its minimal aesthetic to bear with a palette of stone, oak, concrete and bronze. Strandgade 93, Copenhagen is perhaps the most illustrious address in contemporary gastronomy. In the 18th-century warehouse with a façade of whitewashed brick, and views of the city’s inner harbour, lies the HQ of Noma, a family of restaurants that has pioneered the New Nordic movement, and incubated more international culinary talents than anybody except the now-defunct El Bulli. The first floor currently houses Noma’s office and test kitchen, led by co-founder and head chef René Redzepi, while the ground floor was for 14 years home to its eponymous flagship restaurant. Swiss beauty brand La Prairie is breaking new ground by taking luxury cosmetics to the art world. The Italian designer’s ‘Lyndon’ light (also Neri’s first name, coincidentally) was a metal structure holding a glass ball – an upright rod with an illuminated tip, which Neri & Hu liken to ‘its ancient predecessor, the fiery torch’. For nearly four decades, the American artist Jenny Holzer has put unexpected things into unlikely locations. She has projected verses of poetry onto the banks of the Tiber in Rome; relayed slogans across the electronic billboards in New York’s Times Square (‘Protect me from what I want’, said one); inscribed tales of human cruelty onto human skin in ink made of blood; and in her earliest days, used everything from T-shirts to condom packets to disseminate texts all around the city. ‘Men don’t protect you anymore’, cautioned the prophylactic boxes in 1985. Daniel Buren’s new installation offers the opportunity for sleepovers, as he unfurls his trademark MO of coloured stripes and blocks across the exterior and into the interior hallways of the new Yooma hotel, on the edge of Paris’ Front de Seine district. Property developer Pierre Beckerich’s new launch matches Airbnb-type accommodation – rooms cater for two, four and six guests – with traditional hotel services in a former office block, updated and reconfigured by creative director Ora Ïto. The curvaceous façade of the 1970s structure is clad in stainless steel and aluminium sections, punctuated with Buren’s deep blue and black-and-white panels. Go ape BISATE LODGE, RWANDA Rwanda may be justly famed for its wild natural beauty, but its choice of luxury accommodation has been a little sparse. Until, that is, the arrival of Bisate Lodge. The setting certainly does not want for drama. Located in the natural amphitheatre of an eroded crater next to the country’s Volcanoes National Park – made famous by the American zoologist Dian Fossey – the property is the launch pad for excursions to gorilla sanctuaries, lava caves and rainforestfringed lakes. In designing the six-domed villas, Johannesburg-based architect Nicholas Plewman took inspiration from the hive-like King’s Palace museum at Nyanza, while designers Caline Williams- Wynn and Teta Isibo dressed the interiors in woven-straw wall panels, geometric patterns and bright Rwandan textiles. British artists Langlands & Bell have worked together for four decades, producing quietly provocative works ranging from monochrome sculptures to an interactive animation of Osama bin Laden’s house (which earned them a Turner prize nomination in 2004). Like their partnership, their recipe of choice is an ingenious pairing – this time between gurnard, a prehistoric-looking fish, and patacones, fried slices of bananas or plantains. ‘It’s based on meals we have eaten in Cartagena, Colombia, where fish and bananas of many kinds are regularly eaten together,’ they explain.
