It is titled To the Native Yards and portrays a black woman – a housekeeper – looking back over her shoulder at us, the viewer, on her way home. She is painted on a blue bus-stop sign displaying the times 16:00 – 18:00, the time her bus would arrive, to hurtle her down the N2 and into the fringe townships of Cape Town. As from Monday, 16 May, SABC 3’s Afternoon Express will screen season 3 of the interior design reality show Win a Home on Afternoon Express. Set in Paarl’s Val de Vie estate in the Western Cape, the show will follow three contestants as they battle it out in front of the cameras over a 10-week period, working with product developers, artisans and artists to turn three white-box apartments on the prestigious estate into luxury homes. One of the featured projects during Art Week Cape Town in February was Live Architecture: The 55 Minute Hour. Staged in an unused factory building in Woodstock, it was an exploration of the area’s industrial history and gentrification by artists across various disciplines, including performance art, sound art and fashion. The event was curated by a new collective, consisting of art historian and consultant Mary Corrigall, independent curator Amy Watson, and dancer and choreographer Nelisiwe Xaba. Called Off Plan International, it focuses on creating alternative platforms for visual art and performance art outside of commercial spaces such as art fairs, galleries and museums. What is entomophagy? It is the practice of eating insects. How did you get involved in it? The focus of my work [as coordinator for the Slow Food Youth Network SA] is indigenous food revival. Entomophagy, which is as old as time, is just one part of the work. What are people’s reactions to your dishes? It depends on where I am. In late February, Missibaba founder Chloe Townsend and her partner Lizel Strydom spent 10 days in Buenos Aires, soaking up inspiration. In processing his sudden absence from our lives, I am struck by how lucky I have been to encounter someone who engaged with the world by building things. Through the course of his life, Tony’s design attention shifted slowly away from the obsessions of his youth – cars and motorbikes – to wood. I’m fairly confident that Jimmy Choo’s daughter, Emily, has a bank of beautiful footwear at her disposal, and although you could argue her father is not a cobbler per se, that’s beside the point. Body of Art is a heavy, glossy, cloth-bound volume that explores the way the human body has been represented in art through the ages with reference to 450 works of art. They span centuries, mediums and styles. The focus is mainly on Western traditions, but non-Western art is also included. The artworks are grouped into 10 chapters. When architects branch out into product design, interesting things can happen. So when Peter van der Post of Indigenus commissioned Stefan Antoni and Greg Truen to design a planter range, it soon became apparent something special was on the horizon. A chance sighting in 2010 of an old barn sparked the inspiration for a photo shoot more than five years later, says Dave Macdonald, co-director of the furniture maker Homewood. “I was newly settled in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands. While out exploring the area, my interest was piqued by an old barn next to the road between Impendle and Bulwer.” That same year, Dave had left his IT marketing career in Johannesburg and joined Ian Perry, who had founded Homewood in 2005.
