Trappers are prone to travel. When things ice up in the northern states, it seems like every third Yankee trapper loads his truck with hardware and heads for a destination south of the Mason-Dixon line. Some of us good ol’ boys return the favor and go north to trap, too, especially early in the fall before our seasons open and our furs get prime down here. There’s nothing wrong with either practice. Trappers are spread thin since the fur market went soft in 2013, and if it wasn’t for northern trappers coming down here, we’d be up to our eyeballs in beavers. The turkey hen had chosen her nest site carefully, selecting tall, overhanging grass with a nearby open area to lead her chicks into once the eggs hatched. For 15 days, she carefully attended the site, laying one egg each day and carefully concealing it with a covering of grass and debris, essentially building the nest daily as she laid the eggs. Her body told her it was time to start incubating the eggs, but when she arrived from her overnight roost this late-April morning, all she found was a jumble of egg shells. It’s no different than all of the previous successful sets, so what’s up?! Oh friend, you have a grabber and getaway artist on your line. ACTION AND REACTION It must be understood that a groper or grabber is not necessarily uninterested. Take a fox or coyote working a flat set or dirt hole, for example.
