On 17 February, Tarique Rahman became the new prime minister of Bangladesh. The election, on 12 February, was the country’s first since former prime minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled the country in August 2024. Why did Hasina resign? Hasina had become increasingly unpopular, partly because of a new job scheme. Under the scheme, more than half of government jobs could only go to people from certain groups, including descendants of people who fought in the 1971 war that led to Bangladesh’s independence. Government jobs are highly prized in Bangladesh because they are well paid and secure. In July 2024, there were protests against the scheme led by students, who felt it was unfair. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has reported 34 measles infections in Enfield, north London, between 1 January and 9 February. More than 60 suspected infections are also reported in the area. Measles is an illness that spreads easily and can make people very unwell. It can be prevented with a vaccine, a type of medicine that trains the body to fight a disease with its own defences. The UKHSA has urged parents to ensure children are vaccinated.…

Last year, Guinness World Records2025 won Children’s Book Cover of the Year at The Week Junior Book Awards, voted for by our readers. The book celebrated 70 years of Guinness World Records (GWR), and Craig Glenday, the editor-in-chief of GWR, helped put it together. Glenday told The Week Junior that GWR’s goal is to make sure the covers “inspire and excite people”. The team works about two years ahead of publication when it comes to covers. For the 2025 one, Glenday contacted artist Chris Labrooy, who is known for creating designs where letters are made out of objects. Scientists have shown for the first time that bonobos enjoy pretend play. Just like human children, these great apes are capable of using make-believe situations to explore the world around them as they grow up. Bonobos (see panel), along with chimpanzees, are humans’ closest relatives. Human children start playing with pretend objects (like having a tea party with no tea) between the ages of two and three. Apes have shown a similar sort of imagination. Wild chimpanzees, especially young females, have been seen carrying logs like dolls; and a captive bonobo named Panbanisha seemed to pretend to eat blueberries. Once the UK’s largest flying bird, Dalmatian pelicans went extinct here from around 2,000 years ago. On 27 February 1996, the company Game Freak released a video game called Pocket Monsters in Japan. The name was shortened to Pokémon, and it became the highest-earning entertainment franchise (collection of products) ever, including games, films, TV shows, toys and a theme park. What are Pokémon? Weird and wonderful creatures, Pokémon come in all shapes and sizes and 18 different “types”. These range from fire, water or electric through to ghost, dragon and fairy. In the Pokémon universe, they live alongside humans, and some people – called trainers – capture them using devices called Poké Balls and train them to battle other Pokémon. Aerospace company Wisk Aerohas recently showcased its new flying taxi at the Singapore Airshow. The company was created to provide safe, everyday flying for everyone. Its Generation 6 aircraft is electric-powered, and is able to fly itself while humans on the ground supervise the journey on a computer. There’s room for four passengers inside and the taxi can reach an altitude (height) of more than 760 metres. A new music chart has been launched that celebrates the best classical music releases each week. The Official Classical Chart is run by the same company that is in charge of the weekly Top 40 singles chart. The chart is based on sales of the most popular classical albums released over the last 12 months. It aims to show the latest classical artists to new audiences. More than 1.34 million classical albums were bought in the UK in 2025. The top solo classical album was organist Anna Lapwood’s Firedove. The chart will be published every Friday afternoon and will be promoted on BBC Radio 3. Every day, millions of people play the free online word game Wordle. Players have to solve a puzzle to work out a five-letter word. Wordle is owned by the New York Times newspaper, and since November, people who pay for a subscription can also create their own Wordles for friends. Wordle’s success has inspired other word games that have added their own twists to the rules. Thwordle uses themes including Harry Potter, Marvel and Greek myths; while Fibble sometimes lies to you about which letters are included. Worchle is a daily wordsearch puzzle; Dordle gets you to guess two words, not one; and Squirdle is like Wordle but you have to guess a Pokémon character. Budding young artists are being offered the chance to see their work on the cover of an upcoming edition of the Big Issue magazine. The competition is open to artists under 13 years old, and entries will be judged by illustrator Axel Scheffler – best known for his artwork in books by Julia Donaldson, such as The Gruffalo and Stick Man. The Big Issue is inviting submissions on the theme of “peace”, inspired by the Oxford Children’s Word of the Year 2025. The winning design will appear on the cover of an Easter special of the magazine, and the winner will also receive an original illustration by Scheffler. Technology company ByteDance, which owns TikTok, has said it will put limits on its AI video making tool, Seedance 2.0. AI is a computer system that uses data it is fed to create content. Disney and other film studios say users of Seedance have been allowed to use their creative work without permission. Seedance 2.0 was launched on 12 February in China. It allows users to make their own videos by typing in simple text instructions. It has been used to generate videos featuring famous actors and characters, including characters from Disney’s Star Wars and Marvel films, such as Spider-Man and Captain America. On 16 February, Royal Mail issued a warning that post could be late for 105 postcodes (delivery areas) in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Royal Mail has had several complaints over delayed deliveries in recent years. Last year, Ofcom fined it £21 million for not meeting delivery targets. Ofcom oversees UK communications companies. Part of its job is to ensure that Royal Mail provides a “universal postal service” (see panel). What is Royal Mail? Asinger-songwriter wants young people to enter a special talent contest. Time to Shine is run by the charity Caudwell Children for children who have a disability or are neurodivergent (their brain works differently to typical people). Nevaeh Dunmore, 16, has a brain condition called epilepsy. She is dyslexic (which can cause difficulties with reading and writing) and autistic, which affects how she experiences the world. Crocuses are one of the first plants to flower across the UK, bringing welcome colour to lawns and other grassy areas. The tough plant can even grow through snow and is native to mainland Europe. There are lots of varieties of crocus and they are now grown across the world. The flowers can be purple, lilac, yellow, white or striped. Crocus petals are arranged in a cup shape, which can open out to look star-like, and the leaves are like thick, pointed blades of grass. Crocuses are grown from a corm – a swollen underground stem. This stores food, helping the plant survive winter. Crocuses die back after flowering, then grow new blooms and leaves the following spring. Brown hairstreak butterfly Record numbers of brown hairstreak butterfly eggs have been found in Carmarthenshire, Wales. The insect is found in parts of southern and western England and Wales but its habitat is shrinking. It lays its eggs on blackthorn, a hedgerow shrub, but landowners often cut hedges in winter and the eggs are destroyed. Conservationists asked landowners in the area to cut their hedgerows less often and, after counting eggs this winter, volunteers found a 50% increase in brown hairstreak eggs.…

Researchers have found evidence that the Romans used poo in medical treatments. Although historians knew from ancient writings that the Romans used poo in medicine, this is the first ever discovery of physical evidence. While doing research for a book, archaeologist Cenker Atila noticed small amounts of a substance inside some Roman glass bottles on display at Bergama Museum, Turkey. Archaeologists are experts who study ancient objects to help explain history. Atila confirmed that one of the bottles contained poo by opening it and analysing the brown flakes inside. The bottle also contained thyme, which is a fragrant herb, and olive oil. Atila told CNN that one of the reasons thyme was placed in the bottle was to cover up the nasty smell the poo gave off. On 14 and 15 February, hundreds of athletes and para athletes from England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland competed at the UK Athletics Indoor Championships. The annual event was held at the Utilita Arena in Birmingham, England, and featured sports such as running, hurdles, pole vault and long jump. A para athlete is someone with a disability or impairment. As the weather is usually cold at this time of the year, most athletics competitions take place indoors, before going outdoors in the warmer spring and summer months. This year, animation studio Aardman is marking 50 years since it started creating characters for TV. The studio is behind beloved characters such as Wallace and Gromit, Shaun the Sheep and Morph. Part of the charm of the films and TV shows is that they’re made using clay animation, a style of “stop-motion” where filmmakers move the characters (which are made from clay) a tiny amount at a time. A photograph is taken after each movement, and when each frame (photograph) is played in sequence, it looks like the figures are moving. The Young V&A has opened a new exhibition called Inside Aardman: Wallace & Gromit and Friends, to take families behind the scenes of the studio. Isle of Dogs Disney+ Another popular stop-motion film is Isle of Dogs, directed by Wes Anderson, who also directed a film of Roald Dahl’s book Fantastic Mr. Fox. It’s set in Japan, in the fictional futuristic Megasaki City. After an outbreak of dog flu, the city’s mayor demands that all dogs be sent to Trash Island, a place that has been used for dumping rubbish. Twelve-year-old Atari Kobayashi embarks on a long journey to Trash Island in the hope of finding his beloved lost dog, Spots. There, he meets five dogs called Chief, Rex, King, Duke and Boss, who help Atari on his adventure across the island. Like Fantastic Mr. Fox, the film was made using puppets. Author Judith Eagle tells The WeekJunior that “history is a treasure trove of inspiration”. Her latest book, The Blitz Sisters, which is published on 26 February, is about sisters Lydia, Peggy and Teddy and their lives in Britain during and after the Second World War (1939–1945). To write the story, Eagle had to do a lot of research. She read books about the Second World War, researched online and visited museums. She says, “I came across so many interesting, unique angles on life during the Second World War that were just begging to be put into a story.” Eagle was particularly interested in so-called British Restaurants at that time. The winner of the graphic novel category at The Week Junior Book Awards last year was Unicorn Boy by Dave Roman, about a shy boy called Brian. The last thing Brian wants is to stand out, but when a unicorn horn sprouts out of his head he becomes the centre of attention. Roman says he was “awfully shy” when he was growing up, but drawing and writing helped. “It put me on the radar of my teachers and classmates and made me feel like a superhero,” he told The Week Junior. The platforms are in different colours. Some stations are white (such as Yau Ma Tei), orange-brown (Sung Wong Toi) and yellow (Tiu Keng Leng). My favourite MTR stations are Hong Kong and Central, as they are connected by moving walkways and you can walk from one to the other and change to different lines. They are very busy all day long. Assistant editor Eve went along to the Young V&A to see the Inside Aardman exhibition. She said it was fascinating to see behind the scenes of the wonderful animations. As the team put the feature together (page 22), we found out that the character of Gromit has changed a lot. His personality was supposed to be really bouncy but when they crafted the model, it wasn’t easy to move around, so they had to make Gromit much quieter – which made him even funnier. The Royal Mail provides the country’s universal postal service. This means that, by law, it has to deliver letters to every address in the UK six days a week and parcels five days a week. It also means the price Royal Mail charges for sending post must be affordable and the same across the UK. Last year, Royal Mail announced it would be changing its delivery system so that second class letters will only be delivered on certain days of the week, and not at weekends. First class letters will still be delivered six days a week. The changes are being introduced over time.…

Paying attention to films takes a bit of effort. They’re long and sometimes complicated and if you’re not really enjoying what you’re watching anyway, focusing on what’s going on can be a struggle. A type of snail the size of a button that was once thought A to be extinct is now doing well after 10 years of work to help them. The success for the greater Bermuda land snail was the result of teamwork between the government of Bermuda (a collection of islands in the North Atlantic ocean), conservationists from Biolinx Environmental Research in Canada and Chester Zoo in England. Scientists used to think the species had died out in Bermuda. The snails had been under pressure because of climate change and habitat loss – and they were being eaten by two predators introduced to Bermuda: wolf snails and flatworms. Artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots might be very smart but a new study found that they’re not good at giving health advice. AI is a computer system that can learn and do things that usually need human intelligence.
