It’s not always tempting to go outside when it’s cold and wet, but scientists say it’s important for everyone to spend time outdoors. A study last year showed that, on average, children in the UK spent just half an hour outdoors each day.
Why go outside?
Some experts advise spending between one to three hours outside every day, even in winter. “There are lots of physical and emotional benefits to time outdoors,” explains Dr Joanna Fortune, a psychotherapist (an expert in mental health). “You are more active when outdoors. Anything that involves rhythm and movement, including dancing, running and climbing, is a great way to help us feel more connected to ourselves.”
