Funeral for former US president
On 4 January, a special funeral began for Jimmy Carter, who was US president between 1977 and 1981. Crowds gathered to pay their respects as his coffin was taken from his home in Plains, Georgia, to the state’s capital, Atlanta, and then to the US capital, Washington DC, for a final service. Carter won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.
Croatia
President wins another term
Croatia’s president Zoran Milanovic was re-elected on 12 January to serve another five years. Milanovic is from the Social Democratic Party, but the country’s government is currently led by the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) party. Milanovic won with 74% of the vote. He said, “I view this victory as recognition for my work.”
