Most birds wait for spring to nest, but rooks begin settling down in February, or sometimes earlier. Found all over the UK are “rookeries” – collections of rook nests in the tops of tall oak and ash trees. These clever birds mate for life and make their nests by breaking off twigs and branches, and even stealing from other birds’ homes. Rooks are black but their feathers have a shiny greeny-purple sheen. They can be distinguished from crows by the grey-white skin at the base of their sharp beaks. You may hear a rookery before you see it, because rooks are loud social birds – their call is described as a “kaah” sound. Rooks usually lay three to four eggs, which hatch after about two weeks. Our Bolivian black capped squirrel monkeys. They have large brains for their body size, which is thought to be linked to the complex social structures they live in: groups of around 75 male and female monkeys. They communicate with each other constantly, to ensure the group is safe and they know what’s happening. They also love grooming each other, which creates and reinforces bonds between them. Five universities in Australia have partnered with 38 other organisations, including the US space agency NASA, to develop ideas for how to feed astronauts in space. Over the next 20 years, NASA is planning to send humans to the Moon and Mars. It wants to set up a permanent base on the Moon, which would mean having to keep astronauts happy and healthy with nutritious meals for long periods. For now, most space food is pre-made like ready meals and sealed up in pouches. It’s also treated to make it last longer – for example, by being blasted with radiation (a type of energy) to kill harmful bacteria. With nearly 2,000 young athletes and 15 events in seven sports, the 2024 Winter Youth Olympic Games in Gangwon, South Korea, finished on 1 February. The Games have taken place every four years since 2012. This time Great Britain won six medals: four golds, one silver and one bronze. It is the most success Team GB has had at the Games. The winter sports included curling, ice hockey, skating, skiing and snowboarding. Zak Carrick-Smith (16) won two gold medals and a silver to become Britain’s most successful winter athlete. This is one of the questions facing a family of mallard ducks in the new animated film Migration, which is out now in cinemas. The family must travel through the danger-filled and polluted streets of New York City and avoid being turned into a tasty dinner for humans, with the help of a streetwise pigeon. Many animals don’t see the world in the same way that people do. Now, a team of scientists have developed a camera that can recreate what animals see. The camera records video in blue, green, red and ultraviolet – a type of light that humans can’t see, but some insects, such as bees, can. The recordings can be used to recreate what an animal would see, based on information about how their eyes detect light. The scientists hope to learn more about how animals communicate. Hello, we are Pia and Lucy and we have taken over as guest editors of The Week Junior to mark Children’s Mental Health Week. We are the Knightsbridge School wellbeing ambassadors and we visited The Week Junior office, along with younger students from our school (see page 16). We sat in on the Monday news meeting and helped the team choosing the stories for that week. As wellbeing ambassadors, we check in on students’ concerns. Our aim is to make sure that everybody in our school feels represented and listened to. Maya Hanspal is a neuroscientist and her job involves finding ways to treat problems of the nervous system. This system is made up of neurons – special cells that control much of what the brain and body feel and do. Cells are the basic building blocks of all living things. However, at school Hanspal didn’t think she could be a scientist because maths wasn’t her strongest subject. She says she succeeded partly because of her curiosity – a very important quality for a scientist. An invasive species of ant is changing the way lions hunt and eat in Kenya, according to a new study. The species’ arrival has led to a fall in the number of whistling thorn trees, which lions hide behind as they sneak up on zebras. The big-headed ant is one of the world’s worst invasive species. This means it is not originally from the area. The ants arrived in Kenya from southern Africa about 15 years ago, and since then have been attacking the native acacia ant. Acacia ants live in and look after the whistling thorn trees that dot the landscape. For the first time, scientists have recorded parrots using their beaks to swing across branches. The technique, called “beakiation”, was used by rosy-faced lovebirds on a tree-like model in a lab. On 5 February, a group of 13 students from Knightsbridge School in London visited The Week Junior’s office. They were accompanied by two special guests – CBBC presenter and Strictly star Rhys Stephenson, and artist Xavier Leopold – who work with Place2Be to spread the word about the charity’s mission to improve children’s mental health. Mental Health UK This charity grew from the work of four UK-based mental health charities. It aims to give everyone the tools they need to live their best possible life at home, school and work, and to challenge the causes of poor mental health.
