These islands are nothing if not weather-obsessed, as the subject-matter of our small-talk proves. Over the last two years, garden centres – partly thanks to their excellent ventilation – have been able to open more than many other places. Wandering among the plants, having a cuppa and browsing local foods and gifts was a novel pleasure when much else was closed.
