Q : Can you recommend a tree that looks good in winter? The only trees in my garden that have any sort of colour are conifers and they’re so boring. A : With all the bustle and activity during the run-up to the winter solstice/Christmas/the holidays/ call-it-what- you-will, trees only look noticeably lean in the first two months of the new year. This is when fruiting trees prove what good value they are, especially when they are overlooked by birds. Amelanchier is a good small garden tree with lovely autumn colour. Considering the heritage of corduroy trousers, it takes a leap of imagination to think of them as fashionable. I am re-reading Cider With Rosie, but it is ‘how’ I am reading it that is pertinent. Earmarked at chapter three, the memoir has been sitting on my bedside table since summer’s end. There’s no sensible reason to light a candle. We have electricity, after all, which has been doing a perfectly good job of lighting rooms since Edison patented the first light bulb in 1879. You no longer require “a candle to light you to bed”; a mere flick of a switch provides all the illumination necessary. Chances of power cuts are slim these days, so there’s not even the need to have a box of candles on standby. Shower curtains divide opinion. There are those who resist them, favouring a glass screen; others appreciate their cheer and affordability. Here are three ways to bring one into your home. MAKE The only really tricky thing when making a shower curtain is the grommets (metal eyelets), but once you’ve bought a grommet kit (£9.52, drapertools.com), you’ll be away. First, choose your fabric – vinyl, polyester or a polyester/cotton blend fabrics are ideal.
