Doping scandals in cycling, weightlifting, boxing and athletics appear to hit the headlines with gloomy regularity. After decades of big-name revelations – Ben Johnson, Lance Armstrong, Tyson Gay, Shane Warne, ‘unintentional doper’ Maria Sharapova – and recent high-profile debacles involving Russian state sponsorship and British Cycling’s former team doctor, we almost take it for granted that ‘other’ sports aren’t as clean as they should be.
But what about shooting? We’ve certainly seen cases in the past. Russian Olympian Sergei Alifirenko, who won gold for pistol shooting in the Sydney 2000 Games, was handed a two-year ban for doping in 2008. The same year, North Korean Kim Jong-su was stripped of his silver and bronze medals, won for pistol shooting at the Beijing Games.
