SPACE: 2019 Les Prince, email I am greatly enjoying the reruns of Space: 1999 [on the Horror Channel] after so many years’ absence. Since it was made more or less on the cusp of the IT explosion, it is fascinating to see how the producers imagined future tech. It’s amusing to see the computers communicating by little slips of paper and, in one episode, seeing a character actually using a typewriter. I wonder if they hadn’t been watching their Star Trek, where the computers saved information on little square pieces of plastic or even data crystals. Some sequences are straight-up nightmare fuel, especially when we reach the rats… But the human story is strong too, showing the boy’s hopeless trajectory following his parents’ death. Although boasting a radically different design to the ’60s original – and a far more mysterious backstory – the show kept the ‘one boy and his dog’ dynamic, something that Maxwell Jenkins deliberately tapped into while performing his scenes. “I describe the robot as being like one of my pitbulls.
