HOW FAST are you running? Ask yourself midrun—no peeking at your GPS!—and chances are, you’ll get it wrong. Research shows that recreational runners overestimate or underestimate their pace by 32 to 40 seconds per mile. And many assume that unless they’re training for a specific time goal, pace doesn’t matter anyway. AUSTRALIAN MILER Herb Elliott’s gut-churning sand dune workouts prior to his 1960 Olympic gold helped establish hill training as critical to every serious training plan. But simply sprinting up and down inclines isn’t a winning strategy, as Australian researchers discovered. The experts wired up a group of runners to monitor their speed, oxygen consumption, heart rate, and stride length, then sent them out for a six-mile time trial over a hilly course. This field trial captured how runners varied their pace and effort over real-world, hilly terrain and found that they ascended too fast and took more than a minute to recover. I find this obnoxious on two levels. First, I’ve sort of had it with our collective pathological need to digitally document every single thing we do, rather than just doing it. Second, at a road race, pausing for a self-portrait is rude at best, and dangerous at worst. An outright ban, however, is unlikely. No race director in his right mind would risk enraging a legion of smartphone-equipped, social-media-savvy runners. THERE ISN’T a shoe at the center of the buzz-worthy advertisement Mizuno launched in March—just one big idea and a team of business students. “What If Everyone Ran?” uses statistics to demonstrate the potential benefits if 270 million nonrunning Americans were to start running 30 minutes a week. Mizuno hired four students from the University of North Carolina’s Kenan-Flagler Business School to conduct the research. “The advertising agency that represents Mizuno posted something to our school’s career site,” says Ellen Kane, an avid runner, who crafted the project’s academic paper. “I was like, This is awesome. Q I like to play sports. Could that hurt my running? A It depends. Distance running (especially on roads) requires primarily linear movement patterns—up, down, forward—without placing much demand on your balance. Sports like basketball, tennis, soccer, and softball demand multidirectional movements (side-to-side, diagonal, backward). If the fun of playing these sports is important to you, spend time developing the strength, stability, and agility needed to perform them with sport-specific drills (such as side-to-side shuffling and change-of-direction accelerations) and gym exercises (such as lateral lunges and diagonal step-ups) to reduce the odds of an injury. Still, high-speed collisions with other players or the ground could leave you hurt.
