The sound of a vacuum pump is a familiar background noise on many livestock farms in the spring as slurry tankers are kept busy. But what is actually going on inside these pumps? This story starts in the early 1980s when there were no strict application regulations and slurry was splash-plated all year round. Dutch slurry contractor Kurstjens' search for a high-capacity and light-footed machine to reduce damage to land during the winter ended up with the US-built Ag-Gator. At the time, there were a few Ag-Gator 1004s and 2004s running in the UK on sewage contracts. The Dutch contractor is widely acknowledged as being the first to bring a four-wheeled Ag-Gator 2004 to the Netherlands around 1984/1985. Affectionately referred to as the ‘swamp’ machine, other Dutch contractors soon saw the merits of the concept and Kurstjens sold a handful of units each year. TIP OF THE MONTH Softer touch The sharp edges of a pallet tine can chafe big bag hooks which is why this farm has made round sleeves to go over the tines. The sleeves are made from 125mm pipe. To stop the bags sliding all the way back a piece of 18mm pipe was welded vertically. This also improves the reach of the loader which is useful when loading a trailer from one side. A cut out at the rear of the sleeve stops the tube from turning and a retaining pin holds it in place against the vertical part of the pallet tine. When it comes to making circular holes in steel, drill bits tend to be the tool of choice. And it is pretty easy to see why — up to a certain size they are both cheap and precise. But for larger sizes the drill bit's cost becomes disproportionately expensive, and you also need to have a correspondingly large chuck and the appropriate power — the sort not found in most farm workshops. Fortunately, the tool-making industry has thought about this and invented hole saws that cut larger holes with a relatively low-powered drill. How do we get the job done? Simon Hinz and Sören Gimmini are in charge of spraying vegetable crops for a large-scale grower in northern Germany.
