A DURBAN man, who allegedly stabbed his mother to death, had spent the day shopping with her and his girlfriend and later consumed cocaine and dagga with a friend. This emerged at the start of trial of 23-year-old murder accused, Uveer Jaganath, in the Durban Regional Court on Tuesday. Jaganath pleaded not guilty to killing his mother, Jessica, 43, at their Clare Estate home on May 6, 2021. Under the Group Areas Act, Magazine and Railway Barracks residents were relocated and housed in the newly-developed Chatsworth. In this issue, we remember the Padma Group of Chatsworth. A Phoenix family claim that a local drug dealer had framed one of their relatives, who is a known drug addict, for a hit on another dealer. He is now languishing in prison “for a crime he did not commit”. AFRIFORUM’S Private Prosecution Unit has further questioned Unisa’s motive for suspending Dr Reshma Mathura, the university’s acting chief financial officer, as it has emerged that important information was not disclosed to the firm appointed to investigate her. RESPECTED retired judge, Shyam Gyanda, of Varsity Drive, died at his Durban home on Monday after a short illness. He was 69. Gyanda matriculated at Sastri College in Durban in 1971. He attended the University of Durban-Westville where he graduated with BA and LLB degrees. At university, he and Achmad Jappie, who later became the KwaZulu-Natal High Court Judge President, had commenced their academic careers together and both started in practice as advocates around the same time. Judge Gyanda was a colleague of retired Judge Zak Yacoob at the Bar. Yacoob later became a Constitutional Court Justice and served as one of Gyanda’s mentors.
