FED up residents are demanding that the municipality fix a sewage leak in a stream in Westville which has been creating a stench in the area for the past three years. Residents said the stream that flows from Westville Boys’ High School to Conway Drive was contaminated by raw sewage due to broken pipes. Asad Gaffar, chairperson of the Westville Ratepayers Association, said they had been liaising with the eThekwini Municipality but the problem has not been resolved. “City officials have been coming up with all sorts of excuses as to why they can’t repair the leaks. SOUTH Africa is running out of landfill space and in an attempt to alleviate the problem, one of the largest landfill sites in KwaZulu-Natal is recycling and repurposing waste. A landfill site is an area of land that is used to dump rubbish, either directly on the ground or by filling an unwanted hole in the ground. According to Statistics South Africa, about 90% of the 122 million tons of waste produced is sent to landfills each year. Statistics also show that South Africa produces more than 2.1 million tons of paper and 12.5 million cubic metres of wood pulp a year. FOR nine months, Clive Solomon has been waiting for DNA results he hopes will confirm a body lying at the Phoenix Mortuary is that of his brother, Peter Solomon. Peter, 46, from Newlands West, was employed by a company that repairs trucks in Springfield Park, Durban. On September 15 last year, Peter used a company-owned bakkie to visit his partner in Unit 13, Phoenix. Later that night, the bakkie was found alight in Bhambayi in Inanda. THE DA has taken the minister of employment and labour to court in a bid to deem the recent regulations introduced under the Employment Equity Amendment Act unconstitutional. The proposed regulations were published for comment last month, after the Employment Equity Amendment Act was signed into law by President Cyril Ramaphosa in April. The act is expected to come into effect on September 1. In terms of the act, Minister Thulas Nxesi will set specific sector targets by occupational level, province and race group. This would be applicable to every private sector employer employing more than 50 people, every municipality and almost every organ of the state. THE eThekwini Municipality is clearing the illegal dump outside the Bisasar Landfill site at the corner of Electron and Dhulam roads in Springfield Park. Waste dumped illegally in the area includes garden waste, building rubble, and commercial and industrial waste. The Bisasar Landfill site only accepts garden waste of 3.5 tons and below, rubble, and sand cover material. THE 20 African cheetahs that were relocated to India to repopulate the species have decreased in number, but the project remains on track. Three adult cheetahs as well as three cubs bred in India have died since their translocation in February. ONE of five suspects arrested in connection with the kidnapping and killing of Chanlall Dwarika, a lecturer at the Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT), Sandile Mkhize has been granted bail. Dwarika, a 61-year-old electrical engineering lecturer, was kidnapped while conducting maintenance work at a property he rented in Sea Cow Lake on May 28. He was seen on CCTV footage interacting with three men before being forced into the back of his Honda CRV. After a six-day search, his body was discovered in a bush in Inanda on June 3.
