The Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre at the Consulate General of India in Durban will join the festivities to celebrate 75 years of the country’s independence through the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav (Akam). THE five men accused of stealing more than R2 million worth of jewellery from a store in the Phoenix Plaza Shopping Centre have each been sentenced to an effective 13 years’ imprisonment. Siyanda Mthethwa, 30, Siyanda Blose, 35, Philani Ngwane, 27, Mbongeni Mlotshwa, 26, and Siboniso Ndlovu, 24, appeared in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court last Friday. Liverpool will nudge up the price of its season tickets next season for the first time in eight years due to rising costs, the Premier League side said on Tuesday, in a decision the club’s Supporters Board called “cruel and unjust”. Popular Durban stand-up comedian Mervyn Pillay heads back to stage with his new one-man show, Merv the Swerv, on March 21 at iZulu Theatre, Sibaya Casino. The show will start at 3pm. A TEENAGER sustained multiple stab wounds after a fight with another girl outside their high school in Chatsworth last week. The incident was recorded on video and has gone viral on social media. CHEFS with Compassion, a non-profit organisation founded in 2020 in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, recently reached its five millionth meal. The organisation “rescues” surplus food that would go to waste and donates it to its 30 kitchen hubs in Johannesburg where it is cooked to feed people in vulnerable areas. At the age of just 8, Amina Farouk lost her leg after being run over by a drunk driver. These were meant to assist police in their fight against crime. More recently, the metro police K9 unit lost its teeth because it no longer has any dogs. JUDGE Thoba Poyo-Dlwati has made history as the first female judge president of KwaZulu-Natal. Poyo-Dlwati, 47, was recommended for the post by the Judicial Service Commission in October after an extensive interview process. In December, President Cyril Ramaphosa selected her to lead the province. She assumed her role early this year. Poyo-Dlwati is the second-born of 10 children. She was born and raised in Nkwenkwana village in eNgcobo in the Eastern Cape. She said her father provided for his family by ploughing the land with a tractor he owned. He also owned a shop.
