RACE is an issue that’s always simmering below the surface in South Africa. One of the ugliest aspects of the recent wave of looting and violence was the killing of people based on their race in a neighbourhood in the port city of Durban. It was a reminder that the internalised apartheid stereotypes and beliefs are still firmly in place. A consolidated identity has become one of the most worrying South African realities and needs to be attended to as a matter of urgency. Churches still reflect these social divisions, with Sunday mornings being the most divided time. Churches still exist on cultural and racial lines as “all black” or “all white” churches, which can be seen as exclusive or inaccessible. The consul general of India forgot to greet Indian Muslims on Heritage Day, the writer bewailed. But Anish Rajan forgot nothing. His Heritage Day message did not single out any religious group, Indian or otherwise, whether Hindus, Christians, Sikhs, Jews, Jains, Parsis or whatever. THE sea has been a bit of a washing machine – the fishing has been fantastic but the conditions have been rough. The offshore fishing on the North Coast has seen some good fishing for those that ventured out in the less-than-perfect conditions. Some decent garrick have been taken on live baits while slowly trolling around river mouths. The Tongaat Long Beach area has been particularly productive for this type of fishing. This is also a prime area for snoek so make sure you spin with a small spoon while slowly ticking along the backline. 1kg strawberries, washed and halved 3 tbs white sugar 1 tbs lemon juice 2 cups cream, whipped cake 125g butter 1 cup sugar 3 eggs 300g cake flour 1 tsp baking powder ¾ cup milk 1 tsp vanilla essence Place the strawberries, sugar and lemon juice into a bowl and toss. Cover the bowl and chill for an hour. CAKE: Preheat the oven to 180°C. Beat the sugar and butter until pale and creamy. Add the eggs and combine. Sift in the flour and baking powder. MOST South African parents and learners are familiar with the school practice of rewarding learners for academic achievement visibly, tangibly and publicly. Schools tend to reward in ways that are both traditional and unique. Some rewards can be seen on the learners’ school uniform – like a special kind of tie or blazer. Other common forms are pins worn on the lapel bearing words such as “Mathematics” or “English”. These serve as a daily reminder of a learner’s achievement, lasting well beyond the ceremony in which they were presented. Schools assert that reward programmes recognise hard work and scholastic achievements and that they motivate learners to achieve. His address was just about good wishes from one country to another. It was about people of all faiths living in India, so there was no reason to single out any religious denomination for this purpose, because the Indian government’s position is to treat all religions equally. ONCE again, the RK Khan Hospital is in the news and, as usual, for all the wrong reasons. Informal traders whose presence at the hospital for the best part of 50 years, are uncertain of their future. I WAS in Benoni for a couple of days to spend some time with my grandchildren. One day, I was outside with them when it began to storm.
