Primark has announced plans to expand its global Sustainable Cotton Programme. The fashion giant is training more than 160,000 independent cotton farmers in sustainable farming methods by the end of 2022. The aim is to use 100% sustainable cotton in all its product categories. The move will lead to a five-fold increase in the number of farmers enrolled in the programme. Cotton is the main natural fibre used to make many Primark products, from pyjamas to t-shirts and jeans, to baby grows, bedding and towels. Cotton is often grown by famers in rural communities in countries including India, China and Pakistan, where knowledge of environmentally friendly farming methods is limited.
