We’ve been following the build of this month’s cover car - Nick Ponterio’s mind-blowing Mk2 - for quite some time now and thought we knew pretty much everything that had gone into the build. Clearly we didn’t scroll back through his build feed enough, though, because the car actually has previous form. It was only when writer, Bryan McCarthy, asked whether we had scans of the orange Mk2 from PVW 3/04 that we put two and two together! Did anybody else realise it was the ‘same’ car (see right)? What a transformation. It’s safe to say we’ve had a pretty weird year so far. We almost saw the back of Covid but then recently lost our beloved Queen as well. We’ve also seen a change of prime minister (the less said about that the better) and the war in Ukraine also continues. This has all taken a heavy toll on people’s feelings and taken a hefty chunk out of our pockets, too. Over the years the TRAX Silverstone event has gained a bit of a reputation for being something of a boy racer fest, and while that might have been the case a decade ago, let us clarify for you right here and now that this is no longer the case. Modified cars tend to get noticed for their loudest elements, but it’s often the smallest details of a build that are the hardest to get right. The Mk3 Golf has something of a reputation within the community as a bit of an unloved outcast. It’s seen as being a bit overweight, perhaps a touch bland, and a poor replacement for what is widely regarded as one of the best cars Wolfsburg ever created, the Mk2. IN ASSOCIATION WITH It may not look like it but loads has been done to my Mk2 project this month! Honestly… Firstly, the lads at Reflex who are taking care of the body have been doing the thankless task of welding up the Mk2’s engine bay. Yep, you guessed it, every hole (apart from the steering column) is going. And I have been called literally every name under the sun this month by the team there, some of the words I haven’t ever been called before… which is nice! On the plus side, the fire wall and bay in general is a much nicer area to look at, which will only get better once it’s all painted the same colour, but let’s not get too ahead of ourselves shall we?…
