RACHEL CARSON’s Silent Spring, which celebrates its fiftieth anniversary in print this September, is one of the most influential books ever written. In one way or another it drew national attention to the problem of chemical poisons, led to the ban on the pesticide DDT in the U.S. (although it is still used internationally), gave birth to the Environmental Protection Agency, paved the way for the Clean Water Act and Clean Air Act, inspired millions of people to become activists for the environment, gave rise to thousands of grassroots organizations devoted to protecting the health of their communities, and planted the word ecology firmly in the American lexicon. But it is safe to say that if Carson were alive today she would be dismayed at how little people have learned…
