Chairman and CEO of Piaggio Group, Roberto Colaninno, has died aged 80, leaving behind a 20-year legacy featuring some of the most standout machines of the modern era. The BarbersRide motorcycle run is celebrating its biggest year yet, with 39 riders taking on a lap of Ireland to raise an estimated £25,000 for the Make a Wish children's charity. Founded in 2017 by Xavier Berrell, Richie Finney, and Colin Petrie, who all work in the male grooming industry, the event sees riders travel between barber shops. “It's extraordinary really, because when we started, I think we had 12 bikers on it,” Berrell told MCN. “What happened though is everyone knows another biker and slowly but surely it just got bigger and better every year.” This year's ride had the largest attendance to date, with organisers hoping to entice 50 entrants in years to come – and you don't have to be a barber to join in. More images of Royal Enfield's imminent new liquid-cooled Himalayan 450 have appeared on social media, giving the clearest view yet of the bike's spec. A video posted on the Instagram account of leading Indian off-roader (and sometime Royal Enfield Ambassador) CS Santosh appears to show the new Himalayan being put through its paces at an enduro park. MOTO2 PEDIGREE The Street Triple 765 RS packs a punch – and that is down to a whole host of know-how that Triumph have gained from their time powering the Moto2 series. As you can imagine, the race engines are tuned to a higher level than the road bikes, as they rev to 14,400rpm and produce over 140bhp. Kazakhstan-based sidecar brand Ural have just launched what they as billing as the ‘ultimate adventure outfit’, the Gear Up Expedition. A Norwegian tourist had his UK adventure saved by Northumbria Police, who returned his bike to him just two hours after it was reported stolen from the town of Washington. The white BMW was taken from outside a hotel on Emerson Road at the end of July but was located fast thanks to a tracker. THIS WEEK Cops in the east of England are stepping up their use of police bikes in a new initiative aimed at tackling speeding motorists. Norfolk Constabulary have announced a new trial which will see bikes deployed in up to 80 locations across the county where the usual police Safety Camera Teams cannot operate due to positioning or safety issues. According to Norfolk Constabulary: “Historically, police officers or Safety Camera Team operators have found positioning themselves safely, not becoming an obstruction, in a village or a smaller country lane almost impossible. When chasing the title in a specific category, it's easy for bike manufacturers to look at the numbers produced by their rivals and simply come up with something lighter, more powerful and cheaper. Suzuki have not done this with the £7999 GSX-8S, although they have still managed to create something special. And even away from the glare of a launch or even a big group test, the 8S simply rolls up its sleeves and gets on with the job. THIS WEEK TOP STORY KTM have kicked off their 2024 new model reveals with a ground-up redesign of the 390 Duke and 125 Duke nakeds, featuring new engines, chassis parts, electronics, as well as a styling refresh. Designed and developed at KTM's HQ in Mattighofen, Austria, the bikes are then built in India by automotive giants Bajaj. A much-loved collection of more than 80 bikes from the A.R.E. Classic Motorcycle Collection on the Isle of Man will be offered without reserve during midOctober's Autumn Stafford Sale auction with Bonhams. Going under the hammer on October 14-15 as part of a larger 136-lot auction, the bikes previously found a home in the grounds of The Old Vicarage at Kirk Michael village on the Isle of Man TT course and were lovingly curated by the late Tony East, who moved to the Island in 2002 after retiring. The collection was then opened to the public as a museum. Fans visiting this year's Manx are being invited to take part in a mass lap of honour to help celebrate 100 years of the event. The big ride will take place on Sunday, August 27 and will consist of a speed controlled single lap around the 37.73-mile Isle of Man TT course. Organised by the Manx Grand Prix Supporters Club, the MGP Centenary Spectators Lap is open to all motorcycle owners and will pull out of the pitlane 10am following instructions from Clerk of the Course, Gary Thompson MBE BEM. Mick Doohan and Honda's NSR500 were the most formidable and successful partnership of the 500cc era of GP racing, which ran from 1949 until 2001. The NSR scored more than 100 GP wins between its introduction in 1984 and Doohan's retirement in ‘99, and the Aussie took more than half of them. But the bike was far from perfect when Doohan first rode it in ‘89. “The engine was great, but the chassis was terrible,” he remembers, “so it didn't do anything you wanted, and it would just spin up all over the place.” Over the years Doohan and HRC refined the NSR into the most potent weapon in GPs.
