The star-studded Day of Champions, the charity event held before the British MotoGP at Silverstone and the first for two years due to the pandemic, has raised £206,550. Organised by Two Wheels for Life and conceived to raise money for Riders for Health, which promotes health care in Africa, the Day of Champions is traditionally held on the Thursday before the race. The highlight was again the live charity auction of GP memorabilia donated by stars such as Valentino Rossi which alone raised over £77,000 in the first five hours. England’s only ‘real roads circuit’ has been beset with problems in recent years which meant that just two restricted runnings of its historic Gold Cup have taken place since 2017. But now with most issues resolved, two events have been announced for the tail-end of 2022. The first, a bike hillclimb, takes place this weekend – August 20-21 – while Scarborough’s traditional season headliner, the RST Steve Henshaw Gold Cup, returns for the first time since 2020 from September 16-18. The full line-up of riders is yet to be confirmed but many of the world’s best road racers and a top class sidecar grid are promised. Problems date back to 2017 when two crashes at the Gold Cup meeting left several spectators seriously injured and brought racing to a halt.…

Bikers are planning a demonstration to protest about new £6-per-hour motorcycle parking charges being proposed by Hackney Council which could come into force this Autumn. Organised jointly by Save London Motorcycling and London MAG, the demo will take place at 12 noon on Sunday, September 11 at the Amhurst Road Car Park, Aspland Grove, London, E8 1FJ. All are welcome. Kawasaki have revealed hot new colours for a host of 2023 bikes including an eye-popping new red/ black Z900RS. The Ninja 1000SX gets a similar new set of red and black clothes and there are three new monochrome Z900s. Can-Am are preparing to blast back into the twowheeled world with a pair of electric offerings. The firm are working towards getting the Pulse roadster and Origin adventure bike into production in mid-2024 and won’t be revealing the full technical details until 2023. But even so these pictures, combined with the original patents and initial claims, make the company’s return to the motorcycle market an enticing prospect. The timing is set to coincide with Can-Am’s 50th anniversary. The company launched their first models in 1973 and won the AMA 250cc motocross title in 1974. However, by the 1980s parent company Bombardier had put their energy into snowmobiles and watercraft, halting Canadian production in 1982. Harley’s ‘cruiser’ family consists of nine models but in reality you really wouldn’t want to cover any distance on the Breakout or Street Bob, the Softail Standard and Fat Boy are more cruisers, the Fat Bob a mad naked and the Heritage Classic a lighter-weight full-dress model. So that leaves the Sport Glide, Low Rider S and Low Rider ST. In a world dominated by Yamaha’s leading trio, the biggest win for the other firms right now is to finish fourth. Glenn Irwin did just that in two of the three races at Thruxton, either side of a sixth in race two. An Essex motorcycle club has marked its eighth anniversary by raising £30,000 for its local air ambulance charity. Walden Bikers was formed in Saffron Walden in August 2014 after a handful of motorcycling mates, led by founding members Mike Wheeler and Mike Ratcliffe, organised a meeting at their local leisure centre. Eighteen riders turned up and Walden Bikers was born. Eight years on from their initial meeting, the club has gone from strength to strength. A more permanent venue was found at the nearby village of Newport, and they now hold regular monthly meetings and events. Alongside all that they’ve hosted various activities to raise money for the Essex and Hertfordshire Air Ambulance Trust (EHAAT) among other charities. Harley-Davidson have announced a new colour option for selected touring models which is inspired by the brand’s racing history, particularly the XR750 in US flattrack. Called ‘Apex custom paint’, the new option, in Harley racing black and orange, features a fuel tank graphic which mimics the tank shape of the XR750, has subtle shadows and bar and shield patterns and is available on nine models ranging from the Road King Special to the Ultra Limited for a premium of £1900 to £3100. “Apex factory custom paint gives riders the opportunity to express the thrill of speed on the bodywork of their bagger,” said Harley’s Brad Richards.…

Rural roads with a 60mph national speed limit are to be restricted to just 30 and even 20mph under a new pilot. Surrey County Council has announced plans to trial the new speed limits on roads previously restricted to 60mph over an area covering 80 square miles south of Guildford and Dorking. It has not yet revealed when the scheme will begin or how long it will run for. The move comes following calls for urgent changes to road speeds – particularly those on single carriageway rural roads which are often subject to the 60mph limit. In April, in a new policy paper, the Association of Directors of Environment, Economy, Planning and Transport (ADEPT), called for a raft of changes including new national guidance on setting speed limits. Although carbon-fibre forks have come and gone over the years in MotoGP, a new set of carbon suspension developed by BMW and ZF in Germany helped the M1000RR to victory at the recent Spa 24-hour race. As far back as 1983 Honda created carbon forks as well as a carbon frame for the ultimate, and never-raced, version of the four-stroke NR500 GP bike. Over the last few years, Ohlins carbon forks have become a mainstay in MotoGP since their debut in 2017, but using the tech in endurance racing puts it under a different sort of strain by requiring it to perform for thousands of miles at race pace for 24 hours. With a largely unchanged bike, Josh Brookes was dreading his return to Thruxton after scoring just two points there in 2021. US electric bike firm Lightning have revealed fresh details of the land speed racer they hope will top 280mph. The ‘Tachyon Nb’ is being developed with Brazilian firm CBMM who are experts in niobium – a lightweight metallic element. The Tachyon makes wide use of the material, from the brake discs to the swingarm and even components in the onboard charger – allowing it to be more reliable and efficient. “Innovation is in our DNA,” says Lightning Motorcycles CEO and Founder, Richard Hatfield. “This partnership empowers both companies to drive electric vehicle technology to a new level. TTS Performance are at the forefront of supercharging and with the help of Rotrex are forging ahead to develop high-power conversions for a large range of bikes. Depending on the model, a bike kit comprises the Rotrex supercharger itself, a custom CNC-machined belt guard, drive belt, custom fabricated intercooler, oil cooler, oil reservoir with level indicator, air filter, fuel pump, all pipework, brackets and full instructions. It’s worth noting that you will have to vary the technique to suit the bike and tyre. As a rule, most sportsbikes and roadsters lend themselves to DIY tyre changes quite well. But it can become more difficult when you start to encounter large-capacity tourers and custom bikes. The more robust construction of the GT-type tyres often fitted to these bikes can be challenging to tackle with tyre levers… unless you’re something of an amateur strongman. Also, it has to be said there can be an equal challenge in removing the wheels of some of these bikes.
