Motorcyclists across Europe have been united in offering help for people displaced by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Posting in the Trans Euro Trail (TET) Facebook group, hundreds of bikers from neighbouring countries have been offering to meet people at the border. The TET is a network of off-road trails that stretch from the UK and Spain at the Western end right across to Ukraine in the Eastern end. Garner on hold Stuart Garner’s sentencing has been postponed to March 30. Garner had admitted three breaches of the Employer Related Investment Rules while at Norton. Ducati have updated their Multistrada V4 range for 2022, adding a new ‘Iceberg White’ paint job and a range of electronic updates. The Bologna firm have sold almost 10,000 Multi V4s since its arrival in 2021 and plan to expand on this figure with updates to the electronic suspension, infotainment system, and accessories catalogue. The glossy new black and white colour scheme will be available for the S model only from this month. Elsewhere, the Ducati’s semi-active electronic suspension gets a new feature called ‘minimum preload.’ This allows you to reduce the bike’s ride height – making it easier to manage at slow speeds and around town. 42 ALEX RINS TEAM SUZUKI ECSTAR No more errors Alex Rins is one of the more frustrating riders on the grid. A rider full of talent that could easily be a genuine title challenger, but one that spends a lot of time picking his Suzuki up out of the gravel trap. 2021 was extremely difficult. He crashed six times, broke his wrist in a cycling accident on the Thursday of the Catalan GP, hitting a van whilst distracted on his mobile, and recorded just one podium. Former BSB engineer Frankie Carchedi has worked with Joan Mir since he graduated to MotoGP in 2019, so he knows exactly what it takes to win the world championship… and to lose it. Suzuki’s biggest focus during winter testing has been improving qualifying and top speed. Suzuki have struggled with qualifying for years, so that Alex Rins and Joan Mir often start from the third or fourth rows, leaving them an insurmountable challenge. “In qualifying you need to really exploit the rear tyre and finish it in two or three laps,” explains Carchedi. “Our problem is that when we do use the tyre more aggressively, we do exactly the same lap time, so we’re not exploiting the extra grip.” ‘We hope our increase in top power will help’ Suzuki’s qualifying…

KTM had a bizarre 2021. They were nobbled by a change of front-tyre allocation, so they revised the frame and were winning again by mid-season. Then Miguel Oliveira got hurt and they were lost again. That’s modern-day MotoGP - it’s not only the riders that exist on a knife edge, it’s the bikes too. During the second part of the year KTM threw all manner of parts at the bike, without success. Aprilia’s first V4 MotoGP bike used its RSV4 superbike engine and it wasn’t until 2016 that the factory got serious with a full prototype. The 17-year-old broke multiple records last year to become Moto3 World Champion at the first attempt. He outshone everybody that came before him in the class, including Marc Marquez. He even won from a pitlane start! He moves straight into Aki Ajo’s all-conquering Moto2 team, but surely this will be a harder challenge? Think again. 07 DENNIS FOGGIA LEOPARD RACING The title favourite Dennis Foggia’s form towards the end of 2021 was outstanding. He changed the title fight from a one-man stroll to a heated two-rider battle. Acosta vs Foggia included mind games and an on-circuit clash. Foggia took three wins, and a total of six podiums, in the final eight races but lost the title at Portimao after being wiped out of the lead by Darryn Binder on the final lap. With Acosta graduating to Moto2, Foggia naturally becomes the title favourite, and things already look promising for the Leopard Racing rider. ASSISTANT EDITOR, MOTORCYCLING Aman has been jailed for his part in a moped-enabled smash and grab robbery in London’s Regent Street in 2018. Wayne Russell, 23, of no fixed address, was sentenced to four years in prison after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit robbery at Southwark Crown Court. He was also sentenced to 16 months for possession of an offensive weapon, to run concurrently. Russell and five other men arrived at a top-end watch shop, Watches of Switzerland, on three mopeds and a motorcycle before using one of the mopeds to block the front doors of the shop. ‘Exotic name, wild looks… but familiar’ Have a proper good dig about and there are some really obscure JDM models that you’ll never have heard of, let alone ever seen. Except they’re not actually as exotic as you might think. In the 80s and 90s there was no-end of parts sharing, and short-lived models that were essentially a common bike in fancy dress. Take Yamaha’s Zeal. The rare four-cylinder naked 250 has unique looks and a crazy name, but is a parts-bin special: the engine is from the FZR250 (but doesn’t rev as high so is more reliable), wheels and brakes are shared with the TZR250 (among many others), electrical bits are similar to the far more common XJR400, forks and yokes are from the XJ600… and on and on.…

MECHANIC Mike Russell de Clifford, Corsa Classics A huge pool of oil underneath a bike is never a good sign, and this Moto Guzzi 850 T3 obviously needed some urgent attention. Corsa Classics owner Mike Russell de Clifford said: “The guy had run it for a little while, and although he was under no illusions about his abilities as a mechanic, he thought he could change the gearbox oil.” The T3 gearbox takes 750cc of oil, but the measuring jug was missing that day and a litre went in. The main clutch shaft from the gearbox to the dry clutch is hollow, with the clutch pushrod running through it, but it does have pushrod seals at both ends to hold back the excess oil. “That extra 250cc was not ideal,…

‘2021 SHOWCASED JUST HOW TALENTED MIR IS’ 41 ALEIX ESPARGARO APRILIA RACING Time to shine If anybody deserves to find themselves on the top step of the podium this season, it’s Aleix Espargaro. He’s worked hard over the years to get Aprilia to the front of MotoGP, and has reached several milestones in the last two seasons. This culminated in a podium at Silverstone, Aprilia’s first since 2000. It looks like the 2022 RS-GP has made more improvements too. It’s narrower, which makes it more agile and easier to handle. Aleix can really throw the bike into the corners. Reigning champ Quartararo commented that the turning potential of the Aprilia was “a lot”. Aprilia have finished bottom in MotoGP’s last six constructors world championships, but the factory is no longer a pit-lane joke. Aprilia is owned by Piaggio which has realised it needs to spend serious money to fight at the front of MotoGP. In 2019 Ferrari’s F1 sporting director Massimo Rivola arrived at Aprilia, raising the level of the entire operation and allowing chief engineer Romano Albesiano to fully focus on development. The 2020 introduction of the 90° V4 - the format used by Ducati, Honda and KTM - changed everything. Even though the first iteration was hampered by development restrictions, imposed because of the pandemic, Aprilia had obviously found the right road. There are plenty of new riders to look out for this year and following Acosta’s 2021 exploits, who knows, one or more of them could upset the pecking order. One such rider is Daniel Holgado, who takes Acosta’s Aki Ajo seat despite initially being set for Tech3. Clearly, KTM see him as a future talent. Triumph are massively ramping up their UK production in a move that will more than treble output from the Hinckley factory and create nearly 100 new jobs after a big rise in UK and European sales. This expansion comes two years after the company made cutbacks when production of the last two British-built bikes – the Speed Triple and Tiger 1200 – were moved to Thailand. At the time Triumph said they wanted to realign their UK focus to R&D and prototype/ bespoke models. Production was reduced from around 7000 machines per year to 4500, focusing on top end bikes from their TFC range. Kawasaki Racing Team are auctioning two road-legal Ninja ZX-10RR superbikes, but you’re going to need deep pockets. The two track-focused machines boast special heritage liveries used by the firm’s WSB team at the Argentinian round of the 2021 World Superbike Championship. Jonathan Rea’s bike sported the ZXR750 tribute paintjob while Alex Lowes’ machine showcased the black and red of the iconic GPZ900R. The eBay auction for the bikes was set to last until Thursday, March 3, however the Rea replica met its reserve price within minutes – selling for a hefty €70,000. At the time of writing, the GPZ tribute remained on offer, with a lofty ‘buy it now’ price of €100,000. Symptoms like cutting out on tickover or an erratic throttle response are foibles that can be extremely off-putting, not to mention dangerous.
