Fresh on the heels of the release of the public betas for iOS 13, iPadOS 13, and macOS Catalina, Apple has updated both the iOS and macOS versions of its iWork apps: Keynote, Pages, and Numbers. Each app comes with its own bag of goodies, but each one now comes with better options for editing lists, charts, and tables – including the ability to create customized bullets. All three apps also let you stylize your text with new outline styles or by filling in the letters with gradients or your own images. Apple has updated its MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models, but has discontinued the smallest of the bunch, the 12in MacBook. It has also stopped selling the older non-Retina MacBook Air and the non-Touch Bar MacBook Pro (sometimes referred to by Apple fans as the MacBook Escape). Stuck in macOS Recovery with a language you don’t speak? Here’s how to fix this When you start up a Mac while holding down Command-R on the keyboard, the Mac boots into macOS Recovery. In this mode, you can run Disk Utility, access the command-line Terminal app, and reinstall the operating system. But what do you do if you restart your Mac into Recovery mode and a language appears other than one you know? Apple has revealed a voluntary recall for owners of the 15in MacBook Pro. If you bought such a laptop between September 2015 and February 2017, it could have a battery that is at risk of overheating. The tech giant will replace the battery in these laptops for free. To see if your laptop is part of the recall, click on the Apple (›) menu and select About This Mac. In the overview section of the About This Mac window that appears, you should see the operating system as the main header. Underneath that is the listing for your Mac. As we reported on page 4, Apple has announced that design chief Jony Ive is departing as an employee of Apple after almost 30 years with the company, during which he spearheaded the design for iconic products ranging from the iMac to the iPhone. It doesn’t appear to have been a hostile departure, as Apple’s official press release states that Ive is forming an independent design company which will count Apple among its primary clients. I love using my Mac. And yet when I am confronted with a fresh new device running macOS, I am taken aback by the barren expanse that is the default Mac experience.
