• TRY DIFFERENT THINGS I didn’t like making my own papers, but for some, that’s just part of the fun! Glue basting felt like a revelation to me, until I ran out of my expensive glue pen… So I tried a bunch of glue sticks and found a cheap one I loved. If there’s a part of the process that stops you coming back to it, change it, play, experiment. • NEEDLES My hands-down favourite needle to use is the Bohin Milliners size 9 – it’s a good size for my hand. It’s time to get real. How much of your fabric stash is referred to as “the good stuff”? I don’t know what it is about quilters that sees us hoard fabrics for that “one day” project. We all do it. I’m guilty of it as well. But a couple of years ago I had an epiphany while standing at the ironing board: there’s always going to be good stuff to buy and I’m never going to use all this fabric if I don’t start cutting into it. BASTING GLUE BASTING Any washable glue stick will work for basting, but the glue pens are the easiest to use. Just swipe the glue along the first side of the template and then fold the fabric over the paper. Continue around the fabric piece. If you find that the fabric is stuck firmly when you come to remove the papers, dampen the fabric a little and it will peel away. CORNER TACKING • Secure the template to the centre of the fabric on the wrong side, then fold down one seam allowance over the paper. Back when I made my first English Paper Pieced quilt (hexies, of course) I was home all day with my little ones and eager for a hand project to do while they were awake. I cut hexagons out of cereal boxes and scrap paper, ran out of puff after about 30, and started thread basting them.
