For a three-year-old phone that Apple stopped selling last month, the iPhone 12 is making a lot of headlines. French regulators have ordered Apple to stop selling the iPhone 12 citing concerns over high levels of radio frequency radiation. The tech giant has said it will release a software update to resolve the issue. Agence Nationale des Fréquences (ANFR) told Apple to stop selling the iPhone 12 after it found that the phone’s Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) was higher than the allowable limit. In response to years of feverish demand, WhatsApp is finally rolling out on the iPad. In its early years the popular messaging app was available only on iPhone and Android, and although a web version (fave.co/45bcCZz) later enabled users to access their messages on a Mac or PC, the developers steadfastly refused to release a iPad version of the app. Until now. The new iPhone 15 Pro has an A17 Pro processor, the latest in Apple’s A-series for its iPhones. During its Wonderlust event, Apple said the A17 Pro offers “a huge advancement in performance”. Just how huge? Well, we now know part of the answer. Geekbench, a popular benchmark tool, allows users to submit scores to an online database, and it looks like scores have been submitted for the iPhone 15 Pro. Tested with iOS 17, the A17 Pro in an iPhone identified as “iPhone 16.1” (which is likely the iPhone 15 Pro) posted a single-core score of 2,914, which is a 16 percent increase over the 2,520 score of the A16 Bionic in the iPhone 14 Pro. You’d be forgiven if you struggled to name anything new about the Apple Watch Series 9. All of the changes (other than the new pink colour) are under the hood, with a new S9 SiP, U2 ultra-wide band chip, and brighter display. However, the most intriguing new feature is a new double-tap gesture that lets you control some Apple Watch Series 9 commands without touching the display. All you need to do is tap the index finger and thumb of your watch hand together twice to trigger the primary function in an app, such as answering or ending a call, playing and pausing music, or snoozing an alarm. Branded StandBy, this new feature turns your iPhone into a pseudo-smart-home hub whenever it is connected to power and turned to landscape orientation. You can view a digital photo album, see the time and date, and access widgets for weather, Home, and more. As we report on page 4, Apple has released the first update to iOS 17, bringing bug fixes and security updates just days after the major update arrived on iPhones. If you’re not running iOS 17 yet (or can’t), there’s also an update for iOS 16. The changes to the exterior of the Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 are basically non-existent – these devices both look very familiar. But I got a chance to use the new DoubleTap feature on a Series 9, which lets you send a signal to activate the default button in the Apple Watch interface.
