ANXIETY can make people develop Alzheimer’s faster, say scientists. A team of researchers at the Medical University of South Carolina studied MRI brain scans of 339 patients with an average age of 72 who suffered mild cognitive loss. Senior author Professor Maria Spampinato says: “We wanted to see if anxiety had an effect on brain structure, or if the effect of anxiety was independent from brain structure in favoring the progression.” One of the study authors, Jenny Ulber, says anxiety-ridden patients also suffering mild cognitive issues developed Alzheimer’s faster than those without anxiety.
