Do you know the difference between flathead species in NSW? Following the recent changes to Dusky Flathead recreational fishing rules, this is a good time to refresh your identification skills of our popular flathead species. First up is Dusky Flathead which is one of our more common species found in NSW estuaries and coastal bays and can be identified from other flathead species by its distinctive black spot at the end of its tail. Dusky Flathead vary in colour from sandy with brown spots and blotches to dark brown/black with white spots, and often have visible dark bars across the rear of the body. THE term “conservationist” in Australia has had a tarnished reputation, especially if you’re a fisho. Thoughts of fringe dwelling hippies and extreme environmentalists come to mind for many. It’s a different scenario in the US where conservation is firmly engrained in the image of a fisho and hunter. Fishos have long been custodians of their environment. Who doesn’t want more fish to catch, better habitat, less pollution and a sustainable fishery? It’s one thing to have a strong connection to your local fishery, it’s another to take action. NEW Queensland government East Coast Spanish mackerel fishery rules will be in place next month. The changes aim to strike a balance between rebuilding the stock and providing “more controlled access” for recreational and commercial fishers. The management changes include: A northern closure (north of 22˚S – located slightly north of Stanage Bay, between Mackay and Yeppoon) for two three-week periods (six weeks total) in October and November each year. Fisheries Queensland says the seasonal closures will provide vitally important protection for spawning aggregations. The first northern closure will run this year from 22 October 2022 to 12 November 2022 and 21 November to 12 December 2022. NSW recreational anglers continue to be shafted by our State Government. The worth of recreational fishing remains under-valued and I suspect, misunderstood. WITH the cold weather behind us, and the La Nina weather event predicted to continue, our lakes and dams are filled and often over flowing. Increases in water temperature can stimulate fish to undertake spawning migrations and populate the flooded rivers above and below. The lakes and dams themselves offer fantastic fishing. Ground laid bare by drought has now been covered and the fish will move into the warm shallow areas to feed, making bank fishing a good option.
