Artist Maya Lin uses topography to inspire profound meditations. Her deep interest in the natural world comes to light in What Is Missing?, a piece Lin describes as her final memorial project in an eponymous Rizzoli monograph. One iteration is a viewing cone installed at the California Academy of Sciences; inside the reclaimed wood interior, a series of videos depict extinct and endangered species. So when web developer Rich Yessian and architect Kevan Hoertdoerfer submitted plans to set a steel sanctuary, complete with a roof garden, atop a warehouse that dates from 1858, they prepared for an uphill battle. “The anticipation going in was that there would be a lot of pushback,” notes Hoertdoefer, wryly. PROJECT Venice House ARCHITECT SPACE International LANDSCAPE DESIGNER Kathleen Ferguson LOCATION Los Angeles, California Venice, like many neighborhoods in Los Angeles, boasts a rich architectural legacy, though perhaps inadvertently. Its most enduring structures are also some of its most modest: small bungalows closely aligned on narrow lots dot the area, evoking nostalgia for years past. But the eclectic, beachfront neighborhood also carries elements of a second design legacy—as a hotbed of influential, deconstructivist architecture by avant-garde figures, including Thom Mayne’s 2-4-6-8 House (completed in 1978) and Frank Gehry’s Norton House (completed in 1984). The census estimated it to be the fastest growing U.S. city from 2010 to 2013, and this Texas town is booming with new architecture designed to house its burgeoning creative community. For Emily, a stay-at-home mom, and Michael, who works in finance, the priority was to create a low-maintenance space where their three exuberant girls, Carolina, Serafina, and Madeleine (ages 4, 6, and 8), could romp freely. A vertical watercraft has lately become a fixture of Seattle’s weekend waterfront. Part ship, part sweat lodge, the registered, fully motorized vessel is a floating sauna, offering passengers a unique chance to take a 200-degree shvitz or an invigorating cold plunge right in the shadow of the city skyline. Multidisciplinary firm goCstudio conceived the aquatic riff on Finnish sauna culture as a side project one winter and solicted help from peers to make it happen. “We wanted to figure out how to engage the water surrounding the city year-round,” explains principal Jon Gentry.
