I remember our first caravanning trip to France as if it were yesterday. The nerves began to build weeks before our ferry departed, and when it was time to hitch up and leave, white knuckles indicated a firm grip on the steering wheel. The fear stemmed from a mental image of narrow lanes at the port and driving on the other side of the road. Where in the world can you open your curtains in the morning and admire a royal castle and, if the King happens to be looking out of the right window, he can admire your caravan as well? Windsor Castle, of course. Other royal castles may be available. For the past few years, we have been walking the Thames footpath with friends in 10-mile chunks and, last October, we reached Windsor. I spotted a parking area and spoke to one of the attendants who confirmed that sleeping overnight was unofficially permitted. MISSISSIPPI This is the transverse island bed layout of the range, with a rear shower room. There’s a definite boutique feel about all three Alpinas and, even before you step inside, the Alpinas will wow you with a bright light that runs along the full length of the awning rail. There’s no traditional above-door awning light; instead, this strip of light softly illuminates the entire length of the caravan. That’s one feature that distinguishes these giants of the caravan world from all other caravans. Another is a small table lamp. Its base is set into a recess in the surface of the cabinet by the Mississippi’s door. A tiny red light in the base gives you a clue to its ingenuity. Shifting gears Q We are looking to change our towcar, and I wanted to know if an automatic or manual gearbox would be best. A Modern automatic gearboxes are so good that I’d recommend choosing a gearbox based on personal preference for towing and day-to-day use. Years ago, automatic gearboxes may not have had the same levels of control as a manual gearbox, but that changed completely in recent years. My own Vito has an automatic gearbox and we’ve had no issues when towing, even when negotiating a soggy rally field. TV or not TV? It took seven hours to get to Marl Barn Campsite near Settle in Yorkshire from our home in Buckinghamshire. The unexpectedly long journey wiped out our plans to enjoy the afternoon in the countryside, but we were set up in time for our evening meal, took a short walk down the road, and did a bit of forward planning before bed. We spent our first full day at Clapham – not the London district, but a small village in the Yorkshire Dales, where there’s a community shop, a nature trail and a show cave. Large parts of the village used to belong to the Ingleborough Estate, whose owner, Reginald John Farrer, collected plants from around the world and created the woodlands and nature trail with a Himalayan walk and rhododendrons.…

This is by no means an exhaustive list, as seemingly countless sites are available. I have listed five campsites that are an easy tow from port and boast excellent facilities, all of which would be great for that first foray into France. La Bien Assise An easy 35-minute tow from Calais with incredibly easy site access thanks to the roundabout by the front gate. There’s a swimming pool, a large restaurant and bar, and many activities to keep the family entertained, such as table tennis, a games room, mini golf, and tennis courts. DART The Dart has an island bed and a shower room in the centre of the layout, with the shower cubicle on one side and the toilet/washbasin room on the other. When you open the door of the toilet area, it swings across the caravan to latch on the forward end of the shower compartment, so creating an en suite to the bedroom. At the rear of the shower/toilet area, a sliding door divides it from the bedroom. So, it can be as en suite to the lounge as it is to the bedroom. The shower cubicle has an interesting style feature: it has double doors, clear at the bottom and top, with horizontal obscure lines in the centre, decreasing in width towards the top and bottom. Caravan security is a significant concern for many owners and it’s not surprising, as on average 10 caravans are stolen in the UK every week, according to data from Ripe Insurance. Manufacturers and the caravan industry have acted with initiatives like CRiS, the national register of UK touring caravan owners and keepers, which is similar to the DVLA and is recognised by regulatory bodies, as well as insurance companies and police forces. There’s more to it than you might think and there are a few things for you to consider before choosing the style you want. TOWBARS, TOWBALLS, NECKS AND TOW HITCHES The towbar has several parts to it.
