Earlier this month I was in Bristol visiting Bailey and getting a sneak preview of the new addition to its growing stable – the Alicanto Grande Evora (see page 58). I started work for Martins Caravans in 1972. I still have my first wage packet which contained £14.72; £7 was for my mother for board and lodgings and the rest for myself! Martins Caravans was established in 1929. By 1972, you could buy a brand-new Sprite Cadet 10 caravan for £160. How times have changed. In 1977, Martins purchased a garage in Lee Mill for the princely sum of £24,000 and employed me as the manager of what was known as Martins Caravans (Plymouth) Ltd. The underground fuel tanks had to be filled. In those days it was done manually by men shovelling sand into the tanks. I remember the man whose job it was to fill the tanks coming up for air at frequent intervals, sweating profusely while working…

INGREDIENTS 1 cooking apple1 peach2 plums2 figs50g pecan nuts, chopped1 vanilla bean, split and seeds scraped Honey for drizzling5 tbsp sugar125g icing sugar100g soft wheat semolina1 tsp ground ginger2 tbsp unsalted butter1 litre milk Fresh thyme METHOD 1. Core and destone the apple, peach and plums before slicing thinly. 2. In a frying pan, melt the unsalted butter over a medium heat. Add the apples and icing sugar. Toss the apples occasionally in the pan so that the sugar covers them, and cook until the apples are tender and the sugar has caramelised to a light brown colour. 3. Cut the figs into quarters and grill, along with the peach and plums on a low heat until slightly charred. 4. Halve the vanilla bean lengthways and scrape out the pulp.…

At Southampton’s cruise ship dock, elegant passengers emerge from a limousine as we pull up for Red Funnel’s Isle of Wight ferry. Seán insists that cruise would add a few noughts to our deal for the ferry and three nights' camping. He’s so delighted with his bargain-hunting skills it’s as if he’s stalked a prize stag, returning to our cave with it slung around his shoulders. As we rattled along the A4260 through Oxfordshire, I spotted two large birds of prey flying low, just above the trees and hedgerows lining the side of the road. Then I saw another two, and another. With their deeply forked tails, long angled wings and distinctive colouring, they were unmistakeable – red kites. This first, exciting glimpse of the birds came just outside the medieval market town of Deddington, close to Oxfordshire’s northern border with Northamptonshire. Marlstone, an iron-rich limestone, lends the buildings here a golden-brown appearance that seemed almost to glow as we arrived on a sunny summer’s morning. A week before our summer trip to Europe – the first in two years – the sight of queues of lorries and cars waiting for hours to catch the Eurotunnel or sail on ferries on the news assaulted our senses. Worried we might face a long wait before heading into France, we decided we’d travel to Kent the day before our train and pitch up at the Bearsted Caravan and Motorhome Club site on the M20. fact file This is a small campsite with 66 pitches close to Maidstone and only about 30 miles from the Eurotunnel and from the ferry terminal at Dover. The Scottish village we live in feels like the centre of the universe, so we can’t understand why our friends, Hazel and Dymtro, wanted to move away to a little town in North Yorkshire. How could it be a substitute for the dramatic scenery and close community we enjoy? Well, the only way to find out is to visit them. We have a quirky coaster on display in our ’van. It reads, “If I can’t take my dog, I’m not going!” It’s a fun statement of how our Norfolk terrier, Bosworth, is very much part of the team when we go travelling. He comes with us. But now, if we want to go abroad, we’ve realised we have to do some serious planning. It’s turned out to be a timeline of discovery. St Ives is a wonderful location to enjoy Cornwall. It’s full of captivating old streets and boasts a superb harbour and magnificent beaches. INGREDIENTS 275g plain flour1 tsp sugar1 tsp yeast2 tsp salt175ml warm water2 tsp olive oil240g hummus190g grated mozzarella4 artichoke hearts, cut into quarters5 green olives, thinly sliced1 small red onion, roughly chopped5 mushrooms, thinly sliced30g baby spinach150g feta cheese1 tbsp melted butter METHOD 1. In a small bowl, mix the sugar and yeast in the warm water. Leave to rest for five minutes. The yeast should activate, meaning you should see foam forming. 2. When this is done, prepare the dough by adding the yeast water to the flour along with the olive oil and salt. Continue kneading for 10 minutes until you have a soft, smooth dough. 3.
