We envisioned a romantic garden ceremony in the sunshine, surrounded by our close friends and family, delicious food, free-flowing drinks and a relaxed atmosphere. We both come from Indian backgrounds so we decided to have a very simple Hindu ceremony. It was a lot of fun learning about the features of a Hindu wedding, as there are many details that go into the ceremony and each has special significance. My favourite part of the ceremony was a ritual called saptapadi meaning ‘the seven steps’ – with each step we made a different promise to each other. Our ceremony was very meaningful and emotional. My two brothers read a specially chosen scripture, and friends led us in a hymn. After being pronounced husband and wife, we invited both our sets of parents to join us, and our mothers prayed for our marriage. Afterwards, our guests joined us for afternoon tea on the church grounds. Mike and I gave a speech and told everyone what it meant to have them celebrating with us, and then we cut the cake. The theme and overall look for our wedding was musical, ethereal and neutral. Chris and I are both musicians. Growing up together, we shared a lot and bonded through music, although our styles are quite different. Kumeu Valley Estate immediately won us over, with its well-kept gardens, blossoming trees and a tastefully renovated barn featuring large timber beams. It was the perfect canvas to bring our dreams to reality. While planning and organising our wedding, we were overwhelmed by the way our friends and family came together to contribute their time and energy.
