After decades behind the trigger, here’s my quick rundown on how I keep my gear in check. Pressure-pack cleaners Pressure‑pack bore cleaners work, but they can be messy - I once ended up with foam in the receiver. A neater trick: have old cartridge cases bored out (or carefully modify one) to fit the muzzle, use clear office tape to build up the diameter if needed, then fit the pressure pack nozzle to the case. Let the foam sit 15-30 minutes, then patch it out - a single application will remove most of the black gunk. I follow with a standard copper cleaner, then leave the bore coated between trips with a 50/50 mix of Penetrene (rust prevention) and Hoppe’s No. 9 (residual copper removal). Very few places in the world offer the hunter such a wide variety of hunting opportunities as Africa. Huntable species range all the way from the hare-sized dik-dik to the eland, a prime example of which can easily weigh more than a tonne, and a whole variety of animals in between. With such a wide variety of animals potentially on a hunter’s menu, the choice of a rifle is not always as easy as it might seem at first glance. We all know how difficult it can be to successfully control wild dogs. We rarely see them with our own eyes, but the destruction they wreak upon livestock and native fauna is hard to miss. This is why a mate, Bob, and I used some tech to outsmart these wily predators and thin their numbers on a farmer’s property in North Queensland. The property is mainly cane paddocks that gently slope up to a firebreak trail at the base of a heavily timbered hill. The dogs were using the trail as their access through the property, which also took them near a small creek with consistent water supply. When the good ship HMS Endeavour, under the command of (then) Lt James Cook, limped into a large river estuary back in 1770, it changed history. The cutter had grounded on a reef to the south and suffered severe damage, resulting in a seven-week stay in what is now Cooktown on the Endeavour River. I live in Mareeba - the gateway to Cape York - and during the dry season I see a daily parade of clean, trickedout 4WDs heading north and returning covered in red dust and sometimes mud. Some travel unhitched, but most tow a box/camper trailer or a fully equipped caravan. Those who have hunted the Dangerous Seven of Africa (elephant, lion, buffalo, rhino, leopard, crocodile and hippopotamus) tend to develop a preference for one or two of those species. The two that interest me most are buffalo and crocodile. I successfully hunted Cape buffalo in Zambia some years ago, so turned my attention to the Nile crocodile.
