When the internet began clawing at publishing’s business model a generation ago, subscriptions to newspapers and magazines weren’t the only things to suffer. So did the newsstand. A century ago, Newsdealers Association president William Merican proclaimed the newsstand essential to city life. Working people, he said, “buy newspapers to make them forget their misery.
