In the world of beer advertising, emotional attachment is everything. Marketers are often trying to sell consumers feelings—game-day excitement, nightclub cachet, good times with friends—as much as they are the beverage itself. That was the dilemma that startup Spark Neuro’s researchers had in mind as they monitored the brain activity, heart rate and palm sweat levels of beer commercial test-viewers recently on behalf of an unnamed major brewery conglomerate. As marketers work to counter the perception that marijuana is only for potheads, there’s a similar battle being fought on the CBD front—even though the product doesn’t get users high. More formally known as cannabidiol, CBD is usually derived from hemp or marijuana and has only trace amounts of THC (the psychoactive element that gets people stoned). Even when THC is barely present, CBD products are non-intoxicating and are mostly used for health and therapeutic purposes. Products range from skin products to edibles and even beverages. Coca-Cola is reportedly in talks with Canada’s Aurora Cannabis to develop drinks containing CBD. “We are closely watching the growth of non-psychoactive CBD as an ingredient in functional wellness beverages around the world,” Coca-Cola spokesman Kent Landers told Bloomberg News. In a new snarky spot, Ryan Reynolds launched a gin partnership with Richard Branson, who immediately regretted it. On Tuesday, Virgin Atlantic released a video announcing its exclusive U.K. airline partnership with Aviation American Gin, which will be served on the airline’s flights and in its clubhouses. A security breach at Facebook has affected nearly 50 million of the social media platform’s users, Facebook said Friday. The company discovered the breach on Tuesday, informed law enforcement on Thursday and is cooperating with the FBI, Facebook vp of product management Guy Rosen told reporters on a call Friday afternoon. The full extent of the breach is not yet known, but Rosen said attackers tried to access users’ personal information—like names, genders and hometowns—and that they would have been able to access accounts and act as the account holders. Facebook has not yet identified the attackers. Rosen said Facebook “may never know” who was behind the attack.…
