1. LEGO DIGITAL DESIGNER A massive part of the directors’ brief was to ‘stay true to the medium’, so from a very early stage we knew that we weren’t really going to be able to take any shortcuts. Because of that we committed to individually creating every single digital LEGO brick. One track involved developing models and designs using LEGO Digital Designer (LDD). Despite being a relatively simple app, LDD was an obvious choice for building our designs as it came with a complete brick library and reasonably advanced LEGO building capabilities. A few issues ago we crowned the 16-core AMD Ryzen 3950X paired with an Nvidia Quadro RTX graphics card as the current all-round best recommendation for a desktop rendering specification. And that recommendation has not changed, even after testing a workstation with a 32-core Threadripper processor, one with an Intel processor and both new AMD and Nvidia graphics cards. Our advice is pretty simple. The 3950X is the best processor on the market today. For a mid-range rig, pair it with a Quadro RTX 4000. Why does an artist need compositing? Surely everything can now be done in a render? The latest generation of render software can now create imagery on a laptop in minutes, which five years ago would have taken hours on a workstation costing the same price as a nice car.
