About seven years ago, when my wife and I were expecting our first child, my in-laws suggested to us that we move into their house. We decided to turn some of the additions into a garden cottage, which they now live in, and we moved into the main house. They had mentioned before that they thought the house had once belonged to an architect, but, despite a large chunk of my job being to write about houses and architecture, I’d not really paid attention. His love of “basic geometry” informed the novel design, says Michael Anastassiades about the convention-bending Beosound Edge speaker he designed for Bang & Olufsen. The coin-like speaker can be rolled on its base a few degrees to either side to control the volume. Why did you to take on the B&O project? It made perfect sense. Masterminded by Sandalene Dale-Roberts, The Inside Job took just under two years to compile. She worked with Berlin-based design and photography duo Janine Egger and Leopoldine Liechtenstein on the book, which is divided into restaurant chapters: The Test Kitchen, The Pot Luck Club and The Shortmarket Club. The linen-bound hardback book features illustrations of smiling staff by Lawrence Moorcroft. It sat at the edge of a forest, a squat, ordinary house made beautiful by love. Behind the house, just beyond the chicken coop and the vegetable garden, a thick carpet of pine needles nudged the fence, an introduction of sorts to the forest itself. Step into the forest, and sound softens and elongates, like toffee, until you get to an area of white sand and absolute silence. I thought it was the centre of the world. Maybe it was. The story of Gorgeous George is one of connection. There’s the literal connection of architecture and eras: two historical buildings, one Art Deco, the other New Edwardian, on one of Cape Town’s oldest streets, St George’s Mall, rather haphazardly connected to each other some time in the ’50s or ’60s. There is its recent renovation, which, while preserving the building’s character, has also integrated its two parts and connected them to the present with steel and concrete and contemporary design. Emma Shortt, the founder of The South African Sheepskin Company, was looking for a way to create an unshorn-sheepskin product that could be used in winter and summer, which is how a new range of reversible outdoor chair covers came about. Thanks to the wool trapping pockets of air that act as a thermal barrier, sheepskin keeps you warm in the winter months and cool in the summer months. The unshorn Merino sheepskins, which Emma selects by hand, are a by-product of the meat industry. They make great rugs, throws, play mats for babies and bedding for pets, which can be washed in the washing machine. I grew up with the legend of how my parents found our house. The story went that they were buying a cabinet at a second-hand shop when they heard that the former owners of the cabinet were selling their house in Melville. They saw the house and “it had good vibes”, so they immediately bought it for the princely sum of R10 000. It was 1971. My parents lived in that house until they died, in 2008 and 2009, respectively. Ebert Otto is a man of many trades. First, he put his BCom Entrepreneurship degree to use by starting a hazardous-waste-management business, then he obtained a diploma in motor mechanics, and then he became an industrial engineer. Lesego Maloka’s vibrant textile brand began as an experiment when she covered a notebook with fabric. In 2016, she started her textile design studio, doing digital printing on fabric, before pursuing jacquard weaving. Since then, Pone Creatives has grown into a home furnishing manufacturing business with a workforce of 300 weavers, planners and finishers based at a mill in Cape Town. “I’ve always loved vibrant, cheerful colours,” says Lesego about her signature style. “Most of the stories we tell through our work resonate with identity, which we design and illustrate into a textile pattern. The annual Design Foundation Awards recognise the industry’s top achievers in design, manufacture, commercial success and innovation. In 1989, Carrol Boyes took the plunge and left her job as an English teacher to pursue her true passion. She developed sculpted forms to create pewter-handled cutlery, which she sold at the Greenmarket Square flea market in Cape Town. After three years, Carrol was producing and selling about 70 000 items per year, no mean feat for a beginner in the game. She then moved to Limpopo and, with the help of her brother Charles, expanded her team to increase production. As consumers are becoming more health- and environmentally conscious, more wineries are responding to the demand for wines that are sustainably, ethically and organically produced. Farming organically means not using any chemically synthesised products in the vineyards to fertilise the soil or to control weeds, fungi and insects. Sixteen South African wine farms have been certified organic, and that number is likely to rise as the demand for organic wines increases.
