Dalkeith Country Park, just outside Edinburgh, covers 1,000 acres. There are trails through its ancient woodland and along the River Esk, and it contains an “epic” adventure playground (dalkeithcountrypark.co.uk).
Millennium Country Park, in Marston Moretaine, Bedfordshire, has 550 acres of woodland, grassland and wetland (marstonvale.org).
The 40-acre Craig-y-Nos Country Park, in Pen-y-cae, Powys, has Victorian landscaped gardens with lakes, meadows, ancient Scots pines – plus a castle (craigynoscastle.com).
There’s a mile-long dog-friendly beach, which was used by troops en route to D-Day, at Lepe Country Park, in Southampton, as well as wildflower meadows and an adventure-play area (visit-hampshire.co.uk).
Ham Hill Country Park, in Stoke-sub-Hamdon, Somerset, is centred around an Iron Age hillfort, and is a haven for wildlife (visitsouthsomerset.com).
