HANGING IN THE BALANCE Grand Staircase-Escalante Utah National monuments can stir controversy—as they did in late 2017, when the Trump administration announced it would dramatically shrink two monuments in southern Utah. Established in 1996, Grand Staircase-Escalante N.M. lost 800,000 acres, a reduction of 46 percent. Established in 2017, Bear’s Ear N.M. lost 85 percent of its original acreage. Without monument status, the acreage is open to coal mining and oil and natural-gas exploration. Environmental groups (including the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance and the National Parks Conservation Association) and southwest Native American tribes (among them the Navajo, Hopi, and Ute tribes) are suing to reverse the decision. Don’t let your cocktail shaker hog space in the cupboard in between parties.
