NORMALLY at this time of year, I sit down with my training journal and make some kind of sense of how the year went. IN ITS FIRST THREE YEARS, the 890 has proven to be a workhorse for neutral runners logging big miles. It’s always had slightly softer-than-average cushioning, but it featured a fairly stiff forefoot. This overhaul corrects that. Thanks to a new midsole/outsole configuration, the shoe is softer than ever, while deep grooves and the placement of rubber allow the forefoot to be more pliable. WHEN RESEARCHERS AT France’s National Institute of Sport asked a group of triathletes to ramp up their training by 40 percent and maintain that volume for three weeks, the results were predictable—at first.
