THE case against Durban businessman Thoshan Panday, who was arrested and charged for alleged tax fraud of more than R7 million early last month, was adjourned after he failed to appear in court. Panday, 52, was charged with 27 counts of fraud, as well as contraventions of tax legislation that outlaws false VAT and income tax returns. This follows an investigation into the tax compliance of entities he controlled. A PHOENIX mother who allegedly sold her 3-day-old baby boy to a childless couple for R20 after she “brokered a deal with a relative”, has been arrested and charged for child abandonment. It recounts the history of the Phoenix Settlement from the early years of its development, over the changing decades of the 20th century, and into the 21st century to the present time. TO CRACK down on the notorious drug trade in Phoenix, police have stepped away from the conventional methods and are using undercover agents to infiltrate the drug dens. On Monday, after months of investigation, an infamous drug syndicate operating next to a primary school in Phoenix was busted. Pat Naidoo, who rescues animals in Chatsworth, said she was horrified when she recently collected a litter of stray puppies from a family in Havenside. “A family had been feeding a stray pregnant dog that lived behind their home. They told us about the litter and we secured a kennel from a donor for them. When we arrived, one of the pups only had half of his front leg. His leg was cleanly cut off. THE Bloemfontein High Court has ruled that two husbands can use the surnames of their wives, after it found that a section of the Births and Registration Act was discriminatory on the grounds of gender. The proposed change to the act is expected to be brought before the Constitutional Court for a verdict on the constitutionality of it.
