ONE of the oldest seine netters in Durban, Goolam Fareed Essack, who was often referred to as the “Legend of the Sea”, died after his boat capsized while netting sardines on Tuesday morning. Essack, 73, from Welbedacht, arrived with his family and workers at Winkle- spruit Beach at 7.30am and made his way to Umgababa Beach where sardines were spotted. AN OTHONGATHI father of two has become the latest victim of the Tongaat tornado after succumbing to his injuries. Arvin Ramluckan, 37, a boilermaker, from Sandfields, died in hospital on Thursday last week. His cousin, Dinesh Ramluckan, said that on the afternoon of the tornado, Arvin’s company transport had dropped him off near a shop in Sandfields Drive. MURDER accused Grayson James Beare has been found fit to stand trial. He is accused of stabbing a Glenmore family, and killing their mother, apparently because they supported Palestine. Beare, 44, of Berea, was charged with the murder of Halima Firoza Hoosen-Preston and the attempted murder of her husband, Sean Preston, and their son Adam, 18. The father and son, who were also stabbed multiple times, are still in hospital. Their 13-year-old daughter, Sofia, was not harmed. Fishing has been rather exciting this past week, with most of the facets reporting good catches. The shore angling has shifted more to spinning, with the target species changing from the summer inedibles to a more edible-dominated mix. The sardines are causing great excitement, but there’s other action too. The North Coast has seen the bulk of the inedible catches. The Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development is poised to seize all faux meat products that use names like sausage, burger and steak, and claims its prohibition is to shield consumers from substandard or misleading products. THE IFP in the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Legislature calls on the KZN MEC for Cogta, Bongi Sithole-Moloi, and Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube to declare Tongaat a disaster area after a tornado caused enormous damage to homes and infrastructure, resulting in the loss of 12 lives. After visiting areas such as Sandfields, Fairbreeze, Magwaveni, Newtown, Seatides, Greylands, and others, and seeing the extent of the damage, we believe the government must provide immediate shelter to the homeless. We appeal to the MEC and the premier to declare the storm a disaster and activate all emergency mechanisms.
