My body was retaining too much copper, which my liver was failing to filter out. ‘She needs a liver transplant,’ a doctor told my parents. ‘Or she may not last the next 48 hours.’ It was terrifying, but thankfully an organ was found and was flown by air ambulance to Birmingham QE Hospital for the transplant in December 1990.
