The tiny Google Home Mini is, self-evidently, the company’s answer to the Echo Dot. In fact, it looks rather classier than Amazon’s miniature device, with a (non-exchangeable) white, charcoal or coral fabric exterior.
It sounds far better than the Dot, however, thanks to its 40mm full-range driver. To be clear, music lovers won’t swoon at the quality: the bass is quite rumbly and uncontrolled, and there’s little crispness to the treble. For background music, though, it’s vastly more listenable than its rival, and the maximum volume of 68dBA is louder than the Dot’s 62dBA. That said, the quality of the sound drops off as you dial up the volume, with an unpleasant harshness to the tone at full blast.
